GAIL NEP
1947 - 2022

It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Gail Nep, at her winter home in Puerto Vallarta, in the early afternoon of March 6, 2022, with her family by her side.
Gail will be dearly missed by her son Dustin, his wife Michelle and her treasured granddaughter Jaden, as well as her "adopted" son Adam O'Connor.
Gail will also be missed by her sister-in-law Doreen Nep (Shouldice); her nieces and nephews, Leonard Numerow (Danna), David Numerow (Susan) and Michael Numerow (Tracy); as well as great-nieces and nephews, Kevin, Allison, Jennifer, Jeffery, Logan, and Benjamin. Gail was predeceased by her husband, Blair Dawe (2002); parents, Jennie (2002) and Louis Nep (1954); her brother Gerald (2009); her sister Evelyn (2020) as well as Evelyn's husbands, Kenneth Numerow (1990) and Samuel Brownstone (2002).
Gail was born in Winnipeg on July 11, 1947. She was known as "the baby" of the family and enjoyed that status thoroughly! From a very young age, Gail knew she wanted to be a teacher and began her teaching career with Seven Oaks School Division in 1966. Throughout her career she endeavoured to treat her students with love and respect. She was a wise and wonderful teacher. Her compassion, creativity, generosity, and insight were felt by her students, their parents, and her colleagues. Gail's passion for art was evident to all her students. She adored her students, and they basked in the encouragement she would offer. For years after she retired, she kept in touch with her "kids". To her students: thank you for being a part of our mom's fabulous life.
Gail began art consulting in 1979; in 1984 she and Blair opened Uptown Gallery. After Blair's death, mom continued with art appraisals and consulting, working closely with the Winnipeg Art Gallery and many other art organizations. She enjoyed helping many clients with their art decisions and helped many artists with their own passion within the arts community.
Gail continued living life to the fullest, travelling, spending time with numerous friends, and enjoying her Mexican life in Puerto Vallarta each winter with sister Evelyn and all Gail's Mexican friends / family. She always looked at her glass as half full and tried to maintain a positive attitude throughout her life.
Service for Gail will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home on March 21, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Central Standard time. The funeral will be broadcast at https:// funeraweb.tv/en/diffusions/49598.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Department of Advancement, Winnipeg Art Gallery, 300 Memorial Boulevard, Winnipeg, Manitoba,Canada R3C 1V1, or https://www.wag.ca/ support/donate/.

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I am so sorry to hear of Gail passing. I am a friend of hers from a local shop where she would come to see me for the past 25 years to buy her cosmetics.. We would always share our stories about our love for our families and she would always be excited about so many adventures in her life.. I will really miss her .. • Ms. Nep was my Art Teacher at West St. Paul Jr. High way back in the '70's and she was my favorite teacher, I couldn't wait to get to her class. I enjoyed watching her work on her large macramé project when we were working on ours. Because of her, I applied myself to my crafts. She recently contacted me via Facebook messenger and I was quite surprised that she remember me after so many years. It was a beautiful conversation and I was hoping to meet up with her one day. I am so sorry for your loss she was a beautiful person inside and out. My condolences to her whole family. - Posted by: Benita Delfing (Student) on: Mar 24, 2022

  • Dustin, I'm so sorry for your loss, and send my deepest sympathy to you and your family I've nothing but fond memories of Gail and just how nice she was, she always had a smile and was so easy to speak with. - Posted by: Pat O'Connor (Neighbor ) on: Mar 21, 2022

  • Ms. Nep was my favorite teacher in high school, always encouraging and inspiring. She bucked against the trend to paint the whole school a boring beige, with her art room being a vivid, chaotic, and colorful space. She encouraged me to paint a big mural on the wall. She was instrumental in making me realize a creative future was a viable future. When I left Winnipeg to take my dream job, she arranged the school to put a sign in front of WK to wish me well, and that was eight years after I had graduated. She still kept me and my path in her thoughts. That meant a lot and I think of her often. - Posted by: Pablo Antonio Hidalgo (Student) on: Mar 18, 2022

  • Dear Dustin, Michelle and Jaden, It was heartbreaking to hear of your loss. Gail was such a vibrant, positive person and a great friend. She was always fun to be with and brought colour to our world whenever we were all together. She thought the world of her granddaughter and always enjoyed telling us what was happening in her world. She will be sorely missed in ours. Sandi James - Posted by: Sandi James (One of " the Ladies Who Lunch") on: Mar 17, 2022

  • I met Gail just after I finished Fine Arts at U.of M. She came to our shows and chatted with everyone about their work. I ended up working part time at their gallery at The Forks and she invited me to show a large piece of sculpture there. Gail was a supportive and lovely person and the Winnipeg Art community will miss her I'm sure. Our condolences to her family, Lynda and Jeff Regan - Posted by: Lynda Regan (Aquaintace) on: Mar 17, 2022

  • Gail was my best friend and partner for ballet, theatre, special concerts and funky restaurants. She was my educator on the arts, I will miss her dearly - Posted by: Marisa Martin (Very good friend) on: Mar 16, 2022

  • I remember her as my Art Teacher, I was at West St.Paul school. She was the coolest teacher, she let us play records during class. She defended the smaller students from Bullies, she taught me to look at things differently? I helped Tony Tascona hang some Art works at the University of Winnipeg and I mentioned her! He was very gracious and paid her with compliments! Years before she had mentioned him in class! Meeting a local artist was cool as she was! - Posted by: Ken Kowaluk (Ex student) on: Mar 16, 2022

  • Deepest sympathy to Gail's family and friends. I was acquainted with Gail from the mid 70's during her many stops at my studio at Euphoria Stoneware Pottery in St. Boniface, and after that, at art openings around Winnipeg since then. It was always nice to have the friendly chats with her about the arts in Winnipeg. She will be missed. - Posted by: Steve Jorgenson (Art Acquaitance) on: Mar 16, 2022

  • My dear departed wife and I were neighbours who lived across the street from Gail on Tache. We always admired her art work in the gallery at the Forks. We also admired her ability to connect with animals especially Helen' O' Connors dog and cat who was our next door neighbour. My deepest sympathies to the family - Posted by: Aurele Teffaine (ex neighbour) on: Mar 16, 2022

  • I was a student of Miss Nep's many, many years ago. It was the year we moved and I started her class in November. She made me feel so welcome. Ms. Nep sure had a way with students. I was fortunate to have been mentored by someone so kind and compassionate. I am sorry for your loss. Fond memories will last forever though. - Posted by: Carmen Grosse (Student) on: Mar 16, 2022
