FREDERICK HAROLD PRIOR

Frederick Harold Prior passed away peacefully after a short illness on March 13, 2022.
Fred was born on May 7, 1951, in Winnipeg and spent his early years on Lennox Avenue in St. Vital. In 1961, he moved, along with his family, to Montreal where he attended high school and college before landing his first job in the aviation industry with Execaire. He would follow in his father's footsteps, becoming an enthusiast of any machine that could fly. When his parents retired to Winnipeg, he decided to join them and immediately found employment at Standard Aero. He remained a fixture there for the following 38 years as a dedicated employee and beloved colleague.
Post retirement, Fred volunteered countless hours to the Standard Aero Heritage Project. In earlier years, he would attend air shows in the UK and across Canada, usually staying with friends and relatives. Collecting aviation memorabilia was a lifelong hobby, and he looked forward to every breakfast get-together with his aviation pals at the Salisbury House or Assiniboine Hotel. He made sure to never miss out on a free helicopter ride whenever one was offered. On top of all this, he was an underrated photographer whose works were highly regarded. But most of all, Fred was a generous and kind spirit with a bright smile. Fred touched the lives of many children over the years; he was sure to make every Standard Aero Christmas party and Santa Claus parade a delight for all the kids. He extended this same love to his nieces and nephew and their children, never missing a birthday party, where he was delighted to chase little ones around the yard or the living room. Modest in his own ways, he preferred to put others first.
He will be fondly remembered by his sister, Gail, and brother, Gary (Adriana), as well as his aunt Helen, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends who were like family to him.
His siblings would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff at the Health Sciences Centre for the warm care that he received.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Fred's life will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • I just found out about Fred from his estate sale. Collecting aviation memorabilia is an understatement. So much history he collected, most you will never see online. I picked up most of his model collection and wanted to find out more about Fred since I now have these models. Most will get restored and put together, none will be thrown out. Never knew him but I'm sure he would be nice to know. - Posted by: Pat Rogoski (none) on: Aug 01, 2022

  • My deepest condolences to the family, I had the pleasure of working with Fred for many year where I was able to view some of his photography and witness his passion for aviation especially commercial airliners. He was a wonderful person and excellent mentor for the time we working together. He could also inspire many people with the stories of years gone by, a history teller of the evolution of the industry he loved. He will be missed by many, Brett Parkinson - Posted by: Brett Parkinson (Work colleague) on: Mar 22, 2022

  • So shocked and saddened to hear of Fred's sudden passing. Happened to get a post from LinkedIn about the recent Heli Expo and was interested about it as I had worked on the Heli product line for many years; as did Fred. Saw a tribute made to Fred in honor of his passing. He was a super fellow to work with. Loved his sense of humour and he was super knowledgeable on the product and customer service. In my early days with SA he taught me a lot. Rest in peace Fred. - Posted by: Colleen Speidel (Co-worker for many years at Standard Aero) on: Mar 21, 2022

  • My deepest condolences to Gail and Gary and their families on the loss of their brother, and to Helen Morrow, their aunt. I always enjoyed my conversations with Fred at family occasions. Their grandfather was my Uncle Allen, younger brother to my Dad, Jack Morrow. Always difficult to lose a family member so suddenly. May the many happy memories of past happier days help sustain each of you in the future. With deepest sympathy, Morna-June - Posted by: Morna-June Morrow (2nd cousin) on: Mar 19, 2022
