HUGH (HUGHIE) HOLM

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Father and Husband, Hugh Sigrudur Holm, on April 25, 2022, at the age of 83 from late-stage Alzheimer's disease.
Hughie was predeceased by many of his loving family members who all held a special place in Dad's heart. He is survived by his treasured wife of 58 years, Jane; his daughters, Andrea (Jeff), Allison (Jeff), and Ainsley (Glen); the light of his life grandson Graeme; sister Lynn (Wendell); sisters-in-law, Kathryn (Scott), Sheila, and Susan; brothers-in-law, Donny, David, and Bob; special brother-in-law and lifelong friend Jim; as well as numerous loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
Hughie was born and raised on the family farm in Gimli, Manitoba and was a hard worker at a very young age. He had a sweet and mischievous nature which endeared him to all. In 1962, Dad met the love of his life, Jane and they married the next year. At that time, Dad joined Canada Wire and Cable where he enjoyed a long and successful career. Family was everything to Dad. An enthusiastic driver, he loved the family holiday road trips throughout Canada and the United States. When Dad retired, he thoroughly enjoyed summers on the back deck waiting for his 'girls' to visit.
Dad loved it when the extended family got together and was always the most gracious and generous host.
Hughie was a proud Afi who loved his grandson with all his heart. They were a familiar twosome on their outings to the mall. As Dad's orientation declined, it was Graeme's turn to take his Afi's hand with love and confidence so that they could continue their memorable walks together.
Dad was the eternal optimist and found his way through any adverse situation.
He was also an ace cribbage player and was twice dealt a 29 hand! He was a Blue Bomber fan and he and Mom held season tickets for 35 years. Dad loved to study the racing form for visits to Assiniboia Downs, neither last nor least he loved warm winter getaways, ice fishing in Gimli and heartily enjoyed the early morning workouts at the Rehfit Centre. A man for all seasons. Dad was an avid reader and had a collection of many books with a particular interest in history, he would be proud of his grandson who shares in his passion and love of history.
Mexico was Dad's happy place; he loved the beach and the culture. As soon as he and Mom returned from a holiday, Dad was busy planning their next trip, often on a slightly snow-covered deck, shorts on, with travel brochure in hand. He loved animals especially cats who were treated as royalty and all dogs were affectionately called "Mr. Dog".
As a dad and Afi, he led by example and taught us to be kind, work hard, serve others, be respectful, and above all put your family first.
Dad would not want us to be sad at his passing for he is now at peace. Thank you Mom for taking care of Dad all these years. You were his number one advocate ensuring Dad was always treated with dignity.
In keeping with Hughie's wishes cremation has already taken place and there will be no funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Siloam Mission, or an animal rescue of your choice.
Dad, you were loved by many. We will never forget you.

"Come whatever happens now, I'm so glad that I was close to you for a moment of forever", Kris Kristofferson
