DOROTHY VIOLET BARBOUR
Peacefully on May 26, 2022, Dorothy (Dot) Barbour passed away at the age of 89 years.
She was predeceased by her parents, Reg and Elsie Griffiths, and her sister Mae. She is survived by her devoted partner Dave Mills; her children, Lois (John), Jamie (Jackie), Ron; and her grandchildren, Loreen, Scott, Michael, James, Laura and Ryan, and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving her are her three sisters, Betty, Doreen and Marjorie (Allen); her brother Tom (Alice), and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was born on May 18, 1933 on the family farm near Poplar Point, Manitoba. In 1952, she moved to Winnipeg where she resided until her passing. She spent the last few years living at West Park Manor. The family would like to thank the many staff members at West Park for their loving care of Dorothy.
Dorothy was a kind and caring person known for freely giving her time to care for family members. Dorothy was a very talented dressmaker, making everything from casual clothes to beautiful wedding gowns. Many days and nights were spent at her sewing machine finishing up a dress for someone's special event, all while raising her family.
Later on, she ventured out to work in the retail world and found her passion selling fabric and notions. She retired after many years of working at the Sewing Gallery. Dorothy enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren's various school and sporting events.
Dorothy loved to go for car rides, especially if the radio was tuned to her favourite country music station. She enjoyed touring around southern Manitoba where every small town was worth a look. She also enjoyed the scenery while on longer trips out west to visit family. The trip through the mountains always fascinated her. In her later years, she found pleasure in drives to see the sunset. If the clouds looked right for a scenic event, Dot and Dave would head out to various locations on the west side of Winnipeg to enjoy the view and take pictures. The pictures could then be viewed over and over for later moments.
Dorothy loved music and grew up enjoying family sing-alongs around the piano. Her love of music continued right up until her passing.
Cremation has taken place and to honour her wishes no formal service will be held. A Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Masks are recommended.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, 10 -120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2 or online at Alzheimer.mb.ca
