DAVID LAWSON

Leaving many to mourn him, Dave passed away in great peace at Winnipeg's Concordia Hospital on July 6, 2022. He was 95.
He was born April 12, 1927, at the family home in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. He was the youngest of a large family and the only son.
He joined the British Army on his 18th birthday in 1945 and served in Italy and Palestine.
In 1953, with his first wife Jean, he emigrated to Canada, settling first in Toronto. They soon headed to Moose Factory, ON where he taught Indigenous students, developing a great admiration for Canada's native peoples and a desire to help promote their interests. That work took him to Alberta, Yukon, BC and back to Ontario. He worked for Indian Affairs in Ottawa, and then Winnipeg.
Dave was predeceased by his first wife Jean and his second wife Sharon Shields. He leaves behind two daughters, Catherine Lawson and Christine Guttadauria, and two stepsons, Scott and Michael Shields. They, and his many grandchildren and step-grandchildren, will never forget his cheerful and generous ways.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment and reception to follow.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • Prince Albert (PA), Sask, is one of the many places Catherine & her family lived during her dad’s amazing career. When we met PA was our instant connection as my family still lives in the area. Although I never met Dave, the memories and stories Catherine’s shared with me about her father made wish I had met him. Dave had a long, and healthy life; Slàinte mhath! - Posted by: Barb Bruce (Friend of Catherine's) on: Jul 12, 2022

  • I first met the legend that was Uncle Dave when I was about 4. It was then that we realized he was my Great Uncle Dave, a title he didn't like much as he said it made him feel too 'bloody old!' My Dad, Lew is his nephew and a mere 10 years younger. They have been amazing pals all their life and Dad like us all is greatly saddened by Dave's passing. They spent many Sunday phone calls putting the world to rights, discussing football and ice hockey. After my Mum passed away, Dad very bravely made the trip on his own to Canada to visit Dave and Sharon. This was a trip that had been promised for decades. Dave, Sharon and all the family made him so welcome and travelled all over showing Dad their beautiful country. It was really a trip to remember. Although Uncle Dave has been in Canada all life, we all felt really close to him. He always asked how myself and the family were doing and had a genuine interest. There are too many stories to mention of marvellous family gatherings with Dave holding court with a glass of whiskey in his hand. He had an amazing long life, well lived and we were all very lucky to be part of it. - Posted by: Eleanor Thomson/Lewis Appleton (Great Niece) on: Jul 12, 2022

  • Dave & Sharon always attended our Annual Family Bar-B-Q over the years and our dinners with them. He is with Sharon who we miss dearly. We will always cherish the stories and laughs. My deepest feelings of sympathy for your daughters and extended family. - Posted by: Ingrid (Good friends. ) on: Jul 11, 2022

  • Always enjoyed our many visits with Sharon and Dave. Dave always had many stories about his childhood to tell us and we always enjoyed them. Through the many years I have known Dave he was always busy and helping Sharon with our most favourite saying “poor Dave” Of course he always enjoyed his many chores and always completed them with a smile on his face or a we one in his hand. - Posted by: Frances Anott (Sister in-law ) on: Jul 11, 2022

  • I was saddened to learn of Dave’s recent passing. Dave and I were colleagues and friends when he worked in Ottawa at Indian Affairs and used to have coffee or take lunch time walks together often. I always recall he made sure he walked on the outside of the sidewalk nearest the street saying that was proper conduct for a man accompanying a woman 😁. A perfect gentleman and kind man. His broad Scottish accent has always stayed with me as well. When he moved to Winnipeg, and retired we lost contact but I have thought of him over the years and wondered how he was doing. I am so glad that he lived a long and happy life. - Posted by: Maureen Coughlin (colleague and friend from Indian Affairs Ottawa) on: Jul 11, 2022

  • My first memory of Dave he was having a scotch and Mike had the boys over and he took care of us.. he was the sweetest man alive... My heart goes out to the family - Posted by: Shawn (Family Friend) on: Jul 11, 2022

  • I’m the daughter to John and Angie Skoryk. Dave was a brilliant man who always had great stories from the past. We always enjoyed our summer visits to Manitoba with my family. Dave and Sharon would always come to Winnipeg beach to join in with the BBQ. He was always so kind to my children and made us laugh. He always wanted to hear about what we were doing in Alberta and our children’s achievements. My dad John and Dave were joking around with each other and working together on a project around the yard. You were a true gentleman and a class of your own. Thank you for being the man you were. Cheers today we have a glass of scotch to a great man! - Posted by: Randy and Shelley Thomas (Friend ) on: Jul 10, 2022

  • We have never met Catherine’s father but know her well. She shared many, many memories of his deeds and his unselfish devotion to his work. We both wish we could have sat and had a wee dram of scotch with Dave. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers to his family.
