JUNE MARGARET CROSSLEY
(née TEMPLEMAN)
June 11, 1932 August 16, 2022
June passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Concordia Hospital, Winnipeg, after a brief illness, in her 91st year.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert Crossley in 2009, her daughter Karen Crossley in 2020, and her brother Jack Templeman in 2021, and leaves to mourn, her son Gordon Crossley, daughter Kim Crossley, sister Judith Templeman, nieces, Janice Templeman, Angela Backus, nephews, John and Joel Templeman and their families, cousin Pamela Jonsson, and several dear friends.
June was born and raised in Norwood, Winnipeg, the daughter of Bill and Ethel Templeman, and had very close ties to extended family members on both sides of her family - the English Templemans (particularly her grandmother, Margaret Woodcock Templeman), and the Icelandic Jonssons. She maintained those ties over the years and generations, never missing acknowledging a birthday or special occasion, and amassing a personal genealogy archive that many other family members have turned to for their own historic researches.
After a brief career in the accounting department at the Winnipeg Free Press, in 1954 she married Robert (Bob) Crossley, whom she had met as a friend of her brother, Jack, when he and Bob were both Sea Cadets. As a meticulous homemaker, and proud mother of three over the years, she encouraged and supported her husband and children in all their interests and endeavours, passing on to them her precision, artistic flair and commitment to excel at anything she did. While never seeking the limelight, she showed a natural tendency for organization and leadership in anything she was involved in, becoming President of the Manitoba Highland Dancers' Association from 1968 to 1971, when her daughters were involved in competitive Scottish highland dancing, and advancing to head the Food Services department of The Bay at Kildonan Place when she worked there during the 1970s and 1980s. For several decades, until Bob's passing in 2009, she took pride in hosting the family Christmas dinner for as many generations of Crossleys and Templemans as were able to attend each year.
June was a skilled seamstress from an early age, who was accomplished at making beautiful clothes and home furnishings for herself and her family throughout her life. Also talented at knitting and crocheting, she was active in a volunteer craft group at the Dawson Trail apartment complex where she lived for the past 13 years, producing hundreds of blankets, mitts, hats, scarves and baby clothes for hospitals and charities. Her non-domestic skills (greatly admired by her family) included blowing impressive bubblegum bubbles and running the gamut of yoyo tricks.
As long as her health allowed, she enjoyed travelling throughout Canada, the US, UK and Europe. In recent years, she greatly enjoyed playing the penny slot machines at casinos around Winnipeg and Grand Forks - she could while away many hours on her own and usually manage to break even.
June was the heart of her family. Rarely 'backwards at coming forwards' (as she would say) with her opinions on any given topic or situation in anyone's life, she was nonetheless always steadfast, loving and supportive, caring deeply for the well-being of everyone with whom she was connected. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
We would like to thank the staff of N2 East at Concordia Hospital for their excellent care in her final days.
