MARIE SMOOK
Our dear aunt and sister, Marie Smook, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2022, at the age of 101. She was a wonderful person remembered for her undying kindness, smile and positive outlook on life.
She was born in Theodore, Saskatchewan, into a farming family with 11 brothers and sisters. Marie was married in 1943 to her husband Smokey; they lived in Manitouwadge and Geraldton, Ontario, until her husband's death in 1968. Marie then moved to Winnipeg, where she worked with Detroit Diesel for many years until her retirement.
In her spare time and after her retirement, Marie loved her flowers and had exquisite gardens over the years. She entered many flower arrangement fairs and competitions and enjoyed her community. Marie will always be remembered as our favourite aunt and matriarch of our family by her many sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews who visited over the years from all over Canada and the United States. Her home was the family home where we gathered and met up; everyone felt welcomed, loved and well fed. There were never too many of us at one time to be accommodated; the more, the merrier.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, Home Care and Victoria Hospital, as well as her two special friends, Juliett and Illene.
Marie is survived by her brother Orest "Jay" Sine of Nanaimo, BC and many nieces and nephews across North America.
A private interment service at Chapel Lawn will be held at a later date.

Dear everyone - I'll join you in spirit on Tuesday afternoon. The last time I saw Auntie Marie was July 2014, though we kept chatting on the phone til recently. My mum, Marie’s sister Anne Hawrysh, had died earlier that year, in March. Auntie was a warm and understanding support for me during Mum’s long illness, and that July. Veronica, my daughter, and I flew to Winnipeg to visit her. Other family met us there for a mini family reunion - Uncle Orry (Jay) and Stephanie from out west, Sam and her gang from Thunder Bay, Geoff and Lisa of course, and Lynn too was either in the Peg at the time or came down to meet up. We had a great reunion… embellished by two tornadoes! One twister brewed up after a sunny morning. We’d planned to visit the cemetery where Grandma, Uncle Wally, and Auntie Vickie are. While we stopped at a grocery store to pick up 3 bouquets, the sky turned a dark and odd colour. At the cemetery, the wind whipped up a frenzy and thick raindrops hurled themselves at us sideways, but, undaunted, Auntie M started opening the flower bundles, me wrestling the gusts to shield her with an umbrella. She worked nimbly, using the open trunk of the SUV as a work table with a small knife (or Xacto blade?) that materialized from where I don't know, trimming and rearranging the flowers to create 3 gorgeous custom bouquets. Job done, auntie forged across the cemetery, me almost jogging to keep up with her umbrella shield, all of us with heads tucked down against the gale, which seemed to have ambitions to reach Mach 1. Lashings of rain obscured the open field and our vision as she marched us to the 3 different places where Grandma, Wally and Auntie V’s markers are. Auntie M said she’d asked Grandma if she had room for auntie by her feet, could she be buried there? Grandma said to do what she wanted…. Probably didn’t work out quite like that tho! RIP, Auntie Marie. I hope Tuesday is a beautiful day everybody. 💙💚💛🧡❤️ Lorna - Posted by: Lorna Hawrysh (Niece) on: Aug 29, 2022

I always remember my Aunt Marie as growing beautiful flowers and being so soft spoken, kind hearted and loving. My mom was the oldest in the family. When I was a baby and my mom and Marie were together everyone thought I was Marie’s baby because I looked like her. We were so blessed to have her in our lives for so long. She was a kind and loving woman to a fault. Sweet flight Auntie… - Posted by: Lana HUTHER (Niece) on: Aug 28, 2022
