ROSS DOBSON

Ross Victor Goodwin Dobson was born April 15, 1934 in London, Ontario, to parents, Walter and Doris (Goodwin) Dobson. He passed away in Winnipeg on September 27, 2022 at the age of 88 years. His older brothers, William and Walter, predeceased him.
Ross attended Ryerson Institute of Technology, School of Broadcasting Arts, and he worked at the CBC in Winnipeg for many years as an announcer and producer in radio, and a news reader on television. He earned a degree in City Planning from the University of Manitoba, and he wrote and lectured (Menno Simons College) on community economic development. His interest in community affairs included involvement in local politics and a role in "Greening the Forks", an attempt to preserve green space at The Forks in the face of an early threat of commercial over-development.
Ross developed the first LETS (Local Exchange Trading System) in Winnipeg; was on the original Board of the Winnipeg Folk Festival; was a film fan, and served on the Manitoba Film Classification Board.
Ross' creative imagination found expression through writing, pottery making and painting, and artful experimenting in the kitchen. He was an avid reader from early childhood and always had a book or two close at hand. He appreciated the beauty and meaning to be found in words and images, and he was not afraid to express his thoughts and insights in his own writing and his unique art projects.
Ross is survived by his wife and best friend, Roberta (Robby) Simpson; his children; her children; their spouses and grandchildren. He loved, and was loved. His presence will be missed by his families and good friends.

Ross: from the Celtic 'rhos'
meaning 'moorland'.
Adventurous and resourceful.
Powerfully determined.

And so he was. Cremation will take place and a private celebration of his life will be held.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • What can one say of a friend who’s ‘eyes light up’ with new ideas, with art shared, a good joke with great laughter, offering and giving support when needed, allowing a friend into a big ‘secret’ - I was honoured with marrying Ross & Robbie…, keeping the secret and watching peoples faces when they realized there was more to his birthday celebration! What a wonderful time that was! Ross offered a heart-felt friendship that touched my heart and many others, with his genuine caring, loyalty and love. He made himself available when there was a need, he would sit and listen and if needed offered advice- that was solid. I have many memories of Ross, of Ross & Robbie sharing art together, dinners and good chats. I will always be thankful of our time together and will cherish those memories.
