Herman was born in the town of Heerlen, The Netherlands. After completing post-secondary college and a two-year stint in the Dutch Air Force (conscription), Herman visited his sister Evelyn in Transcona the summer of 1958. He liked Canada so much, he decided to stay and become a Canadian citizen.
Herman was a true gentleman, kind, generous, caring, and adventurous. He was an accomplished pianist who could play anything written from sheet music. His preference being classical music but played what friends and family would request. Herman loved the piano and had several throughout his lifetime. He once had three grand pianos, two player pianos, one upright piano and an antique pump organ all at one time in his house on Inkster Blvd. Herman also had an extensive collection of sheet music and music books of all genres. Herman was a true collector. From grand pianos, written music, model trains, antique greeting cards, books and stamps just to name a few. Herman was an avid world traveler, having been a travel agent/manager of Fort Garry Travel for many years. Claiming Herman was unique is an understatement. Herman had a keen sense of home décor, landscaping, gardening and home renovations, antiques and loved dogs and cats. He cherished life and everybody he came into contact with. We will miss Herman dearly.

So sorry for Herman’s passing, Don. We knew Herman from the 70’s and I went with Herman on a Fam trip to the Bahamas for 10 days. He also was our travel agent. We have lost a talented man. Lorraine and Gerry Cairns - Posted by: Lorraine and Gerald Cairns (Friends ) on: Apr 29, 2023

Herman was my cousin. As he was a a few years my senior, we didn't interact often but I always held him in high esteem. He was fun, thoughtful, kind and caring, and very interesting. He loved music and art and had a real eye for decorating. The world is a sadder place now that he is no longer in it. I want to thank his partner Don for the loving care he provided for Herman in the last years as his health declined. He was fortunate to have you in his life. I am sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Margaret George (cousin) on: Apr 23, 2023

Dear Herman the best boss ever who became such a special person and friend over many many years. Always got the gang together for good times full of love and laughter. We worked together when the airlines treated us like gold and Herman was well known for keeping such a loyal staff who worked together so very well with pride and respect for each other. A fine man with a strong moral compass who showed strength and compassion in his own quiet way. Always remembered our birthdays and called us every year long after we had parted ways in our careers. Your laugh and sense of humour will be missed. Let’s party on again some day Herman. Love, Jan - Posted by: Jan Graham (Fort Garry Travel girl and friend ) on: Apr 20, 2023

Herman worked for Fort Garry Travel and I worked for Fort Garry Realty, essentially the same company. That was about 55 years ago. He was always a kind and gentle person. A true gentleman with nothing bad to say about anyone. I hope there are a lot of garage sales and thrift shops in Heaven. He would like that. Condolences to Don and to Herman's family.. - Posted by: bertha smith (long time friend) on: Apr 08, 2023
