DANIEL THOMAS MICHAEL SCHUR
Date of Passing: Apr 10, 2023
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDANIEL THOMAS MICHAEL SCHUR
On Monday, Danny passed away in Winnipeg from glioblastoma
Celebrating his life are his wife of 28 years, Juliane Schaible, his children, Anna and Stefan Schaible-Schur, sister Carolyn Schur (Dave Fetsch), brother Willard Schur (Joyce), family near and far, and his many friends and colleagues. Danny was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Jean Schur (née Krawec).
Danny grew up on the family farm near Ethelbert, Manitoba, where his siblings introduced him to his life’s passions: music and hockey. Danny’s 50-year hockey run, mainly as a goalie, forged many cherished friendships. A highlight was when he, his son, nephew, and Riverview community skaters played vs. representatives of the visiting Ukrainian National Team.
The first phase of Danny’s musical career was as an independent composer / producer / manager based in Winnipeg. He worked with many Juno-nominated artists and created the 1999 Pan-Am Games theme song with his wife. In the second decade of his career, Danny found his calling as a composer of original musicals. His third musical, “Strike!,” set against the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, written with Rick Chafe, was the critical and commercial success that became Danny’s calling card.
The third phase of Danny’s career was as a movie producer. The movie adaptation of “Strike!” (now “Stand!”) took an enormous ten-year effort to produce. When “Stand!” premiered in late 2019, it became the #1 Canadian movie at the box office, with a subsequent release in the US. Throughout his career, Danny focused on his Ukrainian heritage and underdog stories. But Danny always noted that his greatest accomplishment was his family. He often asserted that he could realize his artistic passion because of his wife’s support. Their love was legendary among friends and family, especially their children.
An evening prayer service will be held at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave. in Winnipeg on Friday, April 21 at 7:00 p.m. A funeral for the family will follow at a later date. The service on Friday will be livestreamed and available through a link provided on Danny’s obituary at www.korbanchapel.com. The second service will be recorded and available for viewing later through the same link.
In lieu of flowers, Danny asked that donations be made to Rainbow Stage’s New Works Fund at:
