Sadly, our mom, grandmother and wife, Connie, passed away suddenly after a brief stay at St. Boniface Hospital on June 14, 2023.
Mom had a full life shared with the love of her life Don and their devoted children, Donna and Patricia (Sean). Grandma will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Amber Rae (Michael) and Leah Don.
Our mom was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario where she attended Commerce High School. Mom was Baton Twirling Majorette for the sports teams and Dad was the football player. Mom twirled for the O’Keefettes with the Ottawa Roughriders and attended many a Grey Cup.
Mom and Dad continued their love affair and married in Ottawa in 1959. Mom also worked for the Ottawa Ambulance department and then she was blessed with my sister and I. With Dad’s ever-growing business adventure, we all packed up and moved to Winnipeg. They picked Winnipeg as it was closer to Ottawa so Mom could still be close to her family. Mom stayed at home and raised us both and when the time was right she applied for a job at The Bay as well as myself, Patty, the same day, and guess who got the job? Mom worked for many years at The Bay and then became the store manager of Bowrings for many years.
Mom designed her dream home on a restaurant napkin while out for dinner with my dad. They held onto that drawing and soon the ground was to break and her new home was built, just like the drawing on the napkin. Along came the grandchildren and Mom found her true calling. She happily left her job and took care of our girls and loved watching the Teletubbies with them, spoiling them and never missing an event the girls were in and always being their number one supporter. Mom will always be remembered for her spectacular Christmas wonderland she had on display. We all were amazed how she displayed four full size Christmas trees all in different colours for each of us to enjoy. The grandkids had a separate tree, banisters were decorated and stocking hung on the fireplaces.
Mom’s true passion was her sports! She was a life long fan of Nascar Motor Racing watching every Sunday along with the Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Toronto Blue Jays. She loved all sports. Mom knew every name of each player and took pride knowing all the scores during the week. Mom would call and remind Sean what games to watch and which channels they were on. It’s funny, even her ringtone was NHL startup music.
Mom and Dad were blessed with nearly 64 years of marriage. They were avid Eucher players. They loved to host a great round table card party with their friends. They were fortunate to travel the world together with one of their favourite trips having been riding bikes through the wineries in Europe. They trained for a good year for that trip. Mom and Dad enjoyed their retirement spent at their condo in Bonita Springs. Florida. There they made wonderful friends and enjoyed having the family join them for vacations with trips to Disneyland, air boat rides, gecko hunting and of course shopping! Mom had many adventures all over the world but the ones she loved the most was the yearly drive “back home” as mom would say. Packing up the car with two kids, a dog and multiple suitcases and drive 27 hours back to Ottawa. Mom was the best map reader and kept us on the right road. Mom had the best stories about growing up in Ottawa and still to this day she knows every road detail or shortcut in downtown Ottawa and Winnipeg. Our times in Ottawa were spent at our family cottage playing Rummy, Crazy Eights and 31 before our evening could end. Mom continued to teach Amber and Leah card games at the cottage and it has become a family tradition.
Mom, we want to sincerely thank you for your love, support and unconditional love. As we continue to promise to keep your family traditions you worked so hard to hand down to us. Our hearts will always ache for you and the times and memories we have will live on forever.
Mom wanted to thank Dr. Robyn Olson, Mom was Dr. Olson’s first patient when she was starting her practice and mom truly appreciated all the kindness she has given to our family. Many thanks also to Dr. Ainslie for her care and support.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or Crohn's & Colitis Foundation.
Please come support and celebrate our Mom, Grandma, and Wife on June 26, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
