Peacefully on May 4, 2023, Melvin Berg at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg.
Melvin, fondly referred to as "Mel" (grandpa Mel, uncle Mel), was born in Beatty, SK on August 12, 1925, to parents Lars and Elenora (nee Olson) Berg, who both immigrated from Sweden. Mel was the second youngest of eleven children, all born in Canada. As a child, Mel exhibited an artistic flair that flourished into a lifelong passion for drawing, painting, and the arts.
Following the death of his father early in Mel’s life, Mel’s mother tried for several years to sustain the family farm in Beatty, but ultimately had to sell and move to Flin Flon, MB where Mel completed Grade 12 at the local high school. Following his 18th birthday, Mel enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces and trained throughout Canada in preparation to fight overseas with his regiment (King’s Own Rifles) in the Second World War. The war ended just prior to his regiment’s deployment to France, and Mel returned to civilian life.
Following several years of working as an office clerk at Snow Lake Mine MB, Mel moved to Winnipeg and enrolled in an accounting program at Success Business College. Shortly after graduating, he was offered a financial position with Air Canada, and met the love of his life June (nee Kobar). Mel and June were married in Winnipeg on May 24, 1959. They purchased their first house on Lindsay Street in River Heights in 1961, and a small cottage in Ponemah on Lake Winnipeg in 1963. Family life began with the birth of son Jeffrey, then son Douglas. With a young family and June’s mother (grandma Kobar) living with them, Mel and June realized that a larger house was in order and moved a few blocks away to Centennial Street. The Centennial house and the Ponemah cottage became the Berg Family homes for the next 50 plus years.
Mel and June were persons of devout faith, and were both active members of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Winnipeg for over half a century. They were staples in their community and had countless friends and acquaintances, as well as numerous relatives on both sides of their family who considered Mel and June as "second parents".
Mel is predeceased by wife June, son Douglas, and his ten siblings.
Mel is survived by son Jeffrey (Jennifer), beloved grandchildren, Rebecca, Allison, Emily, Lyneah, and great-granddaughter Peyton. He also leaves a legacy of artistic works, still on display and loved by many.
The family would like to thank the Deer Lodge Centre staff for their exceptional care and compassion during Mel’s stay as a Resident Veteran. Mel’s army photograph is displayed on the Veteran’s Wall of Tower 4, and his charcoal rendering of Winston Churchill graces the main entrance lobby.
Donations in Mel’s name can be made to Deer Lodge Centre.
Interment of Mel and June’s ashes will be at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Winnipeg at a private family service.

Jeff and Family, I‘m so sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. Deepest condolences to you, your family and Doug’s family. I spent 10 years growing up on Lindsay next door to your parents. 1960 to 1970. My name then was Godin. I might have babysat you a couple times. Your Mom and Dad gave us one of Mel’s paintings for our wedding in 1970. I have it hanging here at our cottage in Sioux Narrows. Dear Uncle Mel, You were a wonderful uncle to me. I loved spending time with you and Auntie June at your cottage and house on numerous occasions. We had so many great times especially when the whole family was around. After Auntie June passed I still received phone calls from you asking how the family was doing and you would tell me things going on in Barrie, On which you heard on the news! Our calls would always end with "I love you". Jeff and Doug were blessed to have you as their father. I will always reflect back on my childhood memories. Thank you for being such a loving and caring uncle. Love, Lori June - Posted by: Lori June Stephens (niece) on: Jun 24, 2023
