FREDERICK ERNEST BINNE

June 27, 1944 – July 18, 2023

Sadly, Frederick Ernest Binne, a cherished husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and dear friend passed away on July 18, 2023, at the age of 79 after his battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of strength and dedication that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 31, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at 603 Wellington Crescent.

Fred’s family kindly requests that you visit his tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com. A photo-biography as well as memories and stories published by those who knew him are available there.

Fred was born on June 27, 1944, in Winnipeg to Ethel and Arthur Binne, and grew up in West Kildonan with his sister Eleanor Krovats. As a youngster, Fred and his friends had many adventures on the Red River from swimming to fort-building. He also spent many years at the YMCA and obtained his Masters and Instructors levels. He became a Leader at Camp Steven and instructed swimming to cadets at Camp Shilo.

Fred was a prodigious athlete and scholar, having played for the provincial hardball team and having been invited to attend Olympic trials for the national swim team. Fred opted instead to complete his education and pursue his high school sweetheart Lillian Binne (née Lutack). Fred completed his studies in structural engineering, which launched a career that would have a meaningful impact on the people of Manitoba through his work as chief engineer of Old Kildonan, to his time at Manitoba Water Services Board.

Fred’s most cherished accomplishments involved family. Ice rinks on the lake, coaching his kids’ hockey and ringette teams, overseeing the construction of Southdale’s indoor ice rink. Fred's summers at the family cottage were his happiest times, from building and improvements to time on the water, and especially early morning coffee on the dock with Lillian. Together they traveled abroad and across Canada. With visits to Christine, they fell in love with the East from Kenora to the Maritimes, exploring small townships and taking in the fall colours. Come winter, Fred enjoyed cross-country skiing and a good game of bridge with close friends. In retirement, Fred took to genealogy, making lasting connections with family from England to Australia.

Despite Fred’s indomitable attitude, cancer took him too soon. Fred leaves behind his wife, Lillian; two children, Alan (wife Kaitlyn, grandson Ethan, granddaughters Éléah and Adélie) and Christine (partner Darryl), with whom he was so close; as well as his sister, Eleanor; sister-in-law Dorothy (Akin); and many relatives and dear friends.

Thank you to the friends and family who came to visit. Our deepest thanks to the team at CancerCare Manitoba, the nurses and staff of Riverview Health Centre and at Jocelyn House to whom we're extremely indebted. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pancreatic Cancer Canada or Jocelyn House.

  • My deepest sympathies to Lil, Allan, Christine, Dorothy and others whose lived were touched by Fred. I’ve known Fred since the 1970’s visiting at their summer cottage on Winnipeg River. In all that time I have only known Fred to be a happy, cheerful, easygoing guy with an infectious smile. I have never seen him upset or angry, ever gregarious with a broad grin. Farewell, Fred, and say hello to Janet for me when you see her. Rudy (Kenora & Winnipeg) - Posted by: Rudy Ramchandar (Old friend) on: Jul 29, 2023

  • Our sincere condolences to the family on the passing of Fred. He was always a pleasure to talk to and we always referred to him as Fred "North", as my dad was referred to as Fred "South" since they lived directly across the street from each other. • Fred was such a kind, loving and charismatic family friend who will be greatly missed. One of my favourite memories of Fred was when he came over for a visit with Lil when my daughter was a toddler. Samantha really took to Fred and was quite enamored with him.
