ROBERT JOHN MARR

December 11, 1956 – July 29, 2023

It is with deep sadness that we share Robert’s passing at St. Boniface Hospital after a brave three year struggle with lung and liver cancer. He was predeceased by his loving wife Joan (Braun) a mere 7 months earlier.

He leaves to mourn, siblings, Lenore, Donnamae (Lynn), and Fred (Joanne); as well as Joan’s siblings and their families, Dorothy (John), Harvey (Joyce), Marvin, Ken (Christine), Ray (Mary), and Muriel (Herb).

Rob grew up in Fort Rouge, Winnipeg, and attended Churchill High. He was a carpenter for many years with the Winnipeg School Division. We will all miss his wry wit and sense of humour and his clever, inventive construction ideas. He and Joan lived on an acreage in the Stony Mountain area and enjoyed the rural lifestyle with many friends and social activities. They were well known for their get-togethers of music and bonfires both summer and winter. They also loved their weekends and summer activities at the family cottage at Beaver Creek on Lake Winnipeg.

The family wish to thank Rob’s neighbours (his Stony Mountain family), for their exceptional love and support through the last difficult years.

In lieu of a formal service we are asking friends and family to raise a glass, toast a life well lived, play some of Rob’s favourite music, and remember him in a way that is special to you.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Part 1 of 2 (part 2 of 2 was published before "part 1 of 2" - this message below, also sent on Feb.6,2024) .... My sincere condolences to Rob's family. I'm so saddened by these news - unexpectedly discovered this today. Life is so short .... My husband, Robert and I, when we were young adults, were friends of Rob and Petrice (his first wife) and often went to their house parties in their Fort Rouge home and sometimes at his parents cottage, where we met their dog, Bowie. Bowie was Rob's close buddy and often assisted Rob on the surf-board to do some windsurfing. He marked my memory, such a smart and devoted dog! We surprisingly met Rob at the Stonewall Fall Supper in 2019. We were overjoyed to see him again as it had been such a long time since our last connection. We had the pleasure of meeting his second wife, Joan and we had set a date to go play some pickleball with them in November that year. I unfortunately got shingles that November and then Covid came in the picture and restricted us all. We lost touch again, then my husband got ill and passed away in August 2022. I went on a search for Rob and Joan to let them know, it was then that their own health conditions were revealed to me - both had cancer. How devastating to hear; my husband had died of cancer. I kept in touch with Rob by text since then and he shared the lost of his beloved wife, Joan in December 2022. We were both without our spouses (widower and a widow) that same year. Our last text response was on July 13, 2023. Little did we know that he would leave us shortly after that date. It also explains why he had not responded to my December 2023 text and why I recently suspected there was something wrong; discovered his obituary today. He and Joan are already missed by many of us!! We will all meet again, someday. May God's peace be with you all, his family, friends and Petrice, during these difficult times. - Posted by: N. • We were very sorry to hear of Rob’s passing. Our condolences to his family - Posted by: Sherry and Rick Wood (Friend) on: Aug 07, 2023

  • My sincere condolences to Rob's family.  I was deeply saddened to hear of Rob's passing. I had the privilege of knowing Rob for many decade's.  Throughout all those years Rob remained an exemplary consummate friend.  He had a knack of making everyone feel welcome at his parties and bonfire reunions.   Whether Rob knew it or not, his influence on his friends brought "the guy's" together when we would otherwise rarely see each other.  Rob was the common denominator. As can be imagined knowing Rob for all those years  I have quite a catalogue of "Rob stories", it's funny how recalling one that didn't involve pyrotechnics was difficult. LOL One such story that Rob and I often rehashed, it always made Rob laugh.   One year, Rob organized an afternoon of "baseball, barbeque and beers." The assembled group played ball, drank beers and then barbecued steaks. I sat on the grass devouring my steak. My faithful dog "Nick" at my side awaiting his portion of "steak gristle".  A short time later Rob walked over settling down nearby and with the grin of a "Cheshire cat", Rob made sure that I noticed that he had two steaks on his plate to my one nearly consumed steak. Rob began trying to cut into the meat, but soon realized that his lap was not enough to support the flimsy paper plate.  So he set the plate on the grass in front of him and began to slice into one of the steaks.  The grass was tall and soft so the plate bent under the pressure of the knife & fork.  Rob concentrating on cutting the one steak, was not aware that the second steak balanced precariously on the edge of the plate.  Rob didn't notice the teetering steak, but my dog "Nick" sure did. Nick sprang up and snatched the steak, he trotted off with his prize with Rob in futile pursuit.  After a brief chase Rob sheepishly returned to his plate with only the single steak remaining.  You couldn't script that type of comedy. On many occasions Rob and I used that story as a, "remember back when" moment. Rob, you were a dear friend and you are and always will be missed.  You'll remain in the memory and hearts of all those that knew you. - Posted by: John&Susan Pogorzelec (friends) on: Aug 05, 2023
