JANET SHAKESPEARE
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Janet Shakespeare, on August 3, 2023, age 105, at her residence in Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, with her daughter by her side.
She was predeceased by her husband Charlie, son Leonard, daughter-in-law Gaye, grandson Ian, granddaughter Debbie, great-grandson Christopher, her sisters, Jean, Nell, Mary and many favourite dogs.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Lynda Tunny (Dick), son Norman (Karen), daughter Ione Harvey (Ken), daughter-in-law Bunty (Howie), granddaughter Kim, grandson Adam, great-grandchildren, Marissa, Christian, Athlee, Roberta, Keira, Krystal, and Herk, along with many nieces and nephews and Pingo.
Janet (Jessie) was born in the Ewart District of Manitoba on March 12, 1918. After a brief stay in Scotland (1922-1926) the family moved back to Canada and settled in Reston, Manitoba.
On one occasion while visiting cousins in Winnipeg, Jessie met their neighbour, Charlie, her future husband. They married on October 17, 1942. After the war they moved to the St. James area of Winnipeg, where she continued to live the rest of her adult life.
Jessie was a stay-at-home wife and mum doing piecework at home for some extra money. After her children were grown she worked in the bedding department at Sears Polo Park . . . very handy for shopping. She was a good customer in many of the stores in the Mall and clerks would call her by name as she came into their shop.
Jessie enjoyed reading, needlepoint, knitting, playing scrabble, cooking, baking, travelling and petting dogs. She would often read a good murder mystery, while knitting a sweater or doing a needlepoint at the same time. She cooked many favorite Scottish recipes and made sure her children got a care package of meat pies, soup and lots of baking.
Jessie enjoyed many trips back to Reston to visit her family, first by train and later by car, and there was always an annual trip to visit Ione and Ken in BC. She and Charlie also took many bus tour holidays and cruises. At age 92, she learned how to use a computer to keep up with a changing world. She played online scrabble well past age 101.
Jessie had a beautiful wardrobe (thanks to many clothes-shopping trips), always liked to dress nicely, and get her hair and nails done. In later years, Lynda would do her nails and every Wednesday, Norman would take her to the hair salon.
The family would like to extend a huge thank you to Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts for providing such a caring home for Mum these past 13 years. The staff has been so kind to her. We also want to express our heartfelt appreciation to the many special home care workers who have treated Mum with such love and tenderness. Also, many thanks to Dr. Gillian Breckman who gave Mum wonderful care for so many years.
Donations can be made to Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts, the Winnipeg Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., September 5, 2023 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. in Winnipeg.
