With great sadness, we said goodbye to our beloved mother and Oma on September 14, 2023. Dementia had taken her memory and cancer took her life, soon after celebrating her 99th birthday with her family.
Lissy was born to Friedrich and Gertrud Spann in Berlin, Germany. She met the love of her life, Roman, in the 1950s, and followed him to Winnipeg to be joined in marriage and begin their life together. Their love for each other was truly special. Lissy raised their three children with a loving hand, passing along many of her German traditions, including her Berlin dialect.
She worked as a Red Cross aide and stenographer in Germany. In Canada, she used her talents as a proofreader, typist, and later became a hair stylist at the age of 60.
For many years, Lissy and Roman would rarely miss an opportunity to go dancing. They loved their life in Canada but enjoyed escaping winters in their favourite tropical paradise.
Lissy enjoyed singing in choirs. She loved cooking, baking and was a talented seamstress. Lissy was an active and devout member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic minister, and a Reader. She was also a member of the Kolping Society, the Catholic Women's League, and the German Society of Winnipeg.
Lissy was predeceased by her sister, Wally; her brother, Wolfgang; and her husband, Roman. She will be remembered by her children, Sybil, Yvonne, and Raymond (Ley); and her grandsons, Joshua, Michael, Maxwell, and Simon.
Thank you to the staff of St. Joseph’s Residence who provided compassionate care to our Lissy in her final years.
Cremation and a private Mass have taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of St. Joseph's Residence.
Lissy’s family requests that you visit her tribute page at EthicalDeathCare.com for memories and stories published by those who knew her.

I met Lizzy more then three decades ago in Berlin. She was a wonderful woman and I will always remember her humor and her German with Ganadian accent. And I am very thankful that she has born one of my closest friends, Raymond. And at Oma Anna's 100 birthday I met Sybil and Michael in Berlin. In 2014 I visited Winnipeg an met Yvonne. She was taking care of Ray and Ley's kids so that we could go out for dinner . So I could meet all three children of Lizzy and Roman. In 2014 they made a barbeque and I've never seen so much meat on one plate as then...it was always a great time with all the members of the Kunze family. When my girlfriend Ines and I visited Ray and his family in May this year I'd the chance to see Lizzy on the phone. I didn't know that it was the last time for me. A few weeks later Ray told me about the cancer. When I got the message that she passed away I was deeply sad. Now I know she is in heaven reunited with her Roman and I'm sure they still had a really big barbeque. Thank you Lizzy that you have enriched my life and sorry for my bad English.
