DON SEXSMITH
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don Sexsmith, the beloved husband of Mary, on Friday, October 20, 2023, in the St. Boniface Hospital.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife Mary; son Greg (Gloria); sister Peggy; sister-in-law Helen; grandchildren, Michael (Tara), Jayda (Chris), Andrew (Trista), Aryton and Robyn (Michael); great-grandchildren, Caileigh, Abbe, Bella, Quinnlyn, Alyssa, Owen, Andi, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Brenda; and great-grandson Grayson Hallford.
Don worked in construction, first as a carpenter and later a supervisor. He travelled to all parts of Canada for many years. He was active in sports and was a big Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Jets fan. He was an Olympic official in Track and Field working at the Olympics in Montreal and the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. He also worked with children in soccer, hockey, and baseball at the Crescentwood Community Centre. For himself, he enjoyed golf, but music was his passion. At the age of 13 he began singing with the St. Vital United Church Choir, followed by Harrow United Church and Fort Garry United Church choirs, and did so for the rest of his life. He also sang with the Winnipeg Philharmonic and Winnipeg Male Chorus and many other choirs along his journey. He will be missed by many and lovingly remembered for his warm hugs and wonderful solo voice.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and the aides at the St. Boniface Hospital for their kindness and compassion as well as sincere thanks to family and neighbours for the food, cards, flowers and support. It means so much to know that everyone cares so much.
A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, October 27, 2023, in the Ft. Garry United Church, 800 Point Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of one’s choice.
