MARTHA ELAINE STITT
It is with deep sadness that the family of Elaine Stitt announce her recent passing after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Her family was by her side.
Elaine was predeceased by her parents, Alec and Elizabeth and she will be lovingly remembered by her husband Del; sons, Gary (Jennifer), Brian (Paula), and Robert (Kelsy); her five cherished grandchildren, Kayla, Kieran, Ashlynn, Declan, and Alexandria; brother Wendell Cleland; sisters-in-law, Patricia Bullough and Roberta Stitt; brother-in-law, Bob Stitt (Janet); and extended family and friends.
Elaine was born in Rossburn, MB and spent her childhood years on the family farm. She grew up as a true country girl where she developed a lifelong love for the outdoors. She often spoke fondly about her early years riding horseback to school and all the pets she loved so much.
Elaine graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1962 and worked briefly at the Winnipeg General. In 1980 she returned to the workforce as an occupational health nurse at the T. Eaton Company where she worked until 1998. While in this role, she received the Governor General's Award for her work as an educator for St John’s Ambulance.
She met Delroy at age 17 at a Rossburn Community dance and they eventually married in 1963 which led to 60 amazing years together. (They just recently celebrated their 60th anniversary and Elaine was a beautiful, vibrant picture of health). Del and Elaine moved to Brandon in 1964 and resided in Toronto, Ottawa, and Thunder Bay over the next several years. In 1972 they moved to Southdale in Winnipeg where they spent the last 51 years.
Elaine was completely devoted to her three children’s early years where she looked after the family as a stay-at-home mom. She was very involved in every aspect of their lives and activities including hockey, curling and skiing and worked as a Scout troop leader. She particularly loved the annual ski trips to the mountains with friends and family where we have so many incredible memories.
One of Elaine’s favourite places was their cabin on Little Gordon Lake, Ontario. She loved being surrounded by family and friends at the cottage, working tirelessly to make everyone’s lake time as perfect as possible. We have so many fond memories of endless days spent hiking, fishing, swimming, sailing, water skiing, playing card/ board games and cocktail hours on the dock. In particular, she will be remembered for her incredible passion and skill for gardening. Elaine spent countless hours on her beautiful gardens that provided so many cherished memories for her family.
Elaine was a long-time member and ladies past president of the Heather Curling Club where she curled for most of her adult life. She was also a long-standing member of the Windsor Park United Church.
In retirement, Elaine and Del wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 22 years where she developed so many lifelong friendships, and pursued her passion for healthy living, hiking, tennis, golfing and stained-glass work.
Elaine will always be remembered for her loving spirit, devotion to family, and constant pursuit of kindness and wholesomeness.
The family wishes to acknowledge the exceptional care at Health Sciences Centre and Riverview.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or your preferred charity.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 6, at 603 Wellington Crescent (Unitarian Church) in Winnipeg. Ashes will be interred at a later date in the Rossburn Cemetery.
