ALFRED (ALFIE) RAMSAY

Alfie Ramsay, affectionately known as Papa, was born on April 28, 1942, and departed this world on October 25, 2023. He was predeceased by his parents, Alf and Winnie (nee Brown), his nephew Ryan Robertson, and his first wife, Diane Fraser, in 1991.

Alfie is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Boone, his children, Scott and wife Lisa (with grandchildren, Jasmine and Skylar), Kelly (partner Mike Pauls, and grandson Jordan), his sister Lynne (husband Jack Robertson, and nephews, John and wife Lisa and Kevin), stepdaughters, Kristin Meyer (partner Chris Wilkinson and grandchildren, Ty and Caeden), and Amber Pelletier (partner Tim Philippi and granddaughter Bella Rogers).

Born in Winnipeg and raised in the West End on Banning Street, Alfie’s journey through life was marked by love, laughter, and a strong sense of family. He attended Greenway School, General Wolfe School, and Daniel McIntyre, shaping the foundation of his education. In his early adult life, he resided on a small acreage in St. Adolf, where he embraced the beauty of rural living. It was here that he met the love of his life, Linda, and they moved to Southdale, where they shared countless cherished moments.

Alfie and Linda embarked on a beautiful journey together saying “I do” on January 31, 2004, marking the beginning of a love story that would span nearly two decades. Alfie and Linda shared a love for travel, exploring destinations like the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Branson, Graceland, Hawaii, and Mexico, with Mexico holding a special place in their hearts. He was a beloved figure wherever he went, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. Known for his captivating storytelling, Alfie had a unique way with words, often playfully mixing them up in his own “Papa-ism” style.

Alfie’s career saw him working for the government, first at the Computer Centre and later with MDS/ISM/IBM, where he dedicated 30 years of service and retired at the age of 52, filled with anticipation for the adventures that lay ahead. Throughout his life, Alfie had an unquenchable passion for sports, particularly curling, baseball, and golf. In his later years, he played senior slow pitch for Winnipeg South and served as the president of the league in 2000 and 2001. He also held the role of president within the Manitoba Slow Pitch Tournament League (MSSTL), reflecting his deep commitment to the sport he loved.

Stubborn in the most endearing way, Alfie’s kindness and unwavering love were evident in all he did. He cherished Linda, who was his protector and source of comfort. His signature calls of “Linda!” would pierce the silence, assuring that everything was right in their world. Alfie was a family man through and through, always ensuring there was a game to play at family dinners and relishing the role of host during Christmas gatherings, often sporting comical Christmas outfits. His Christmas shopping expeditions in April were legendary, ensuring all his girls had safety items. As the jolliest and quirkiest Santa Claus, Alfie’s joy during the Holiday season was infectious. He was a man of pride, capable of building and fixing anything, but his most remarkable attribute was the depth of his love. He loved with all his heart, and was a steadfast presence as the head of the family table. Alfie had a penchant for tall tales and “embellishing” stories, adding a touch of magic to every conversation.

Alfie leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and the warmest memories. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Papa, and may your Papa-isms and laughter echo in our hearts forever.

  • It has been many Years I have seen Alf, but fondly remember our growing up years in the West End. My condolences to the Family Frank - Posted by: Frank Siemens (Friend) on: Nov 13, 2023

  • I am very sorry to hear of Alf's passing...when I did not see him at the St. Vital Curling Club this fall, I was concerned knowing that Alf was always there to guide his team in the Tuesday Master League to either the Grand Aggregate or "A" Group winner or usually both. I curled with both Earl Stephenson and Alf Ramsay after I retired. I don't know if I have ever seen a better 'stick' curler than Alf and his accomplishments support that fact. Alf was never outspoken but carried a lot of respect with how he conducted himself. My sincere condolences to Linda and Alf's complete family. May the good Lord give you peace comfort and understanding during these difficult times. Alf and his loyal and professional but friendly style will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, my friend! - Posted by: Ronald (Ron) S. Smith (Friend through curling) on: Nov 09, 2023

  • I am sorry to hear about Alf’s passing. I grew up with Alf in the West End of Winnipeg. We enjoyed many games of pickup sports usually at Greenway School Grounds. As we entered our late teens and early twenties we attended many parties and get togethers at Clear Lake. Alf had a great attitude, sense of humour and always fun to be around. My sincere condolences to all of Alf’s family. RIP Alf. - Posted by: Brian Fleming (Friend) on: Nov 04, 2023
