EMILE ERNEST COUTU

May 16, 1946 - November 15, 2023

It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of our beloved Emile. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by family on the morning of November 15, 2023, at approximately 9:00 a.m.

Emile is survived by his loving partner, friend and companion of 48 years Marion; his daughter Wendy; his stepson John; stepdaughter Dawn (Sean Nielsen); grandchildren, Hayden and Sidney; brothers and sisters, Doris (Jules), Rose (Ken), Albert (Patsy), Victor (Karen), Roland (Diane) Linda, Corinne (Claude), Cyril (Debbie), Leonard (Anita), Douglas, Neil (Mary), Larry (Wendy) and sister-in-law Wendy Sliworsky and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Emile was predeceased by his two young sons, Walter and Trevor. He can now rest easy with his boys. Also predeceased by his mother Florence in 2010 and father Herve in 2012; older brother Omer and sister-in-law Jessie; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Sloane and Dave Palmer; sister-in-law Marilyn Coutu; nephews, Darcy and Marcus; great-nephew Bradley Munro and great-niece Ryan Pistun.

Born May 16, 1946 in St. Laurent Manitoba, Emile was the sixth of 14 children. As a big boy his Dad often pulled him out of school to go work in the fields but he preferred working in the convent for the Nuns, cleaning floors, cooking and peeling potatoes. One day the Nuns gave him the heave ho and said young man you’re getting too big and your time here is done. So it was back to the fields for our sad little Emile.

Emile started his working career in Winnipeg in hardwood flooring; for a while he worked at cribbing and framing with his brother Omer but decided he wanted to continue with hardwood where he stayed until his retirement in 2018. Emile always took pride in saying he taught his brothers everything they know about hardwood, including some of the younger generation carrying on the torch namely his nephews, Kevin and Cyrille.

Emile and Marion met in Calgary in 1975. He always said that she fell in love with him at first sight in that bowling alley where they were looking for a fourth team member. Emile walked in with his bowling bag in hand and Marion went up to him and asked "Do you want to bowl on our team" and he said yes. That was it for them, from that day there was no turning back. They had ups and downs but never regrets. Maybe little tussles over who the "Boss" was but Emile always knew Marion let him wear the pants in the family.

There was nothing more important to Emile than his family. He especially enjoyed talking with his siblings and looked forward to their calls. Big brother Albert called him almost every day just checking in; he would call his brother Neil on Saturdays where they’d spend hours on the phone. He would often comment, funny Cyril didn’t call me yet today, I haven’t heard from Linda in a while, I wonder what Larry is up to, wonder how Rose, Doris and Corinne are doing. He especially enjoyed the last two visits from his brothers, Victor, Roland, Cyril, Leonard and his nephew Ricky, when they set up a friendly afternoon poker game. He later commented on how much he enjoyed his day, it was so nice to spend time with his brothers and hoped they would continue to visit.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I didn’t know Emile well, even though we both lived in St. Laurent for my past 23 years. What I did know, is that he was a quiet upstanding gentleman, well-respected in our community, and truly loved by his large family and many friends, all of whom he obviously enjoyed being with more than anything else. We also very much admired Emile for how, even in sickness, he selflessly supported his lovely wife Marion in her stellar and tireless volunteer work in our community. Our community was blessed to have Emile. He will be very missed. - Posted by: Randal T Smith (Friend) on: Nov 24, 2023
