BARBARA BRANDT

Dearest Mom,

We are deeply saddened by your passing on Thursday, November 23, 2023, after battling cancer. You fought a good fight until you could fight no more! You were an amazing woman with so much energy and drive, and you always made time for family and friends.

You were born to Jack and Betty DeGuerre on October 27, 1944, in Port Credit, Ontario. You grew up on an apple orchard with your parents and younger sister, Susan. You taught in London, Toronto, and Galt, Ontario, before heading west to teach in Winnipeg at a few different schools.

Husband Robert Brandt (deceased in 2008); daughter Susan (Dave); son David (Holly); three grandsons, Connor (Susan and Dave), Parker, and Austin (David and Holly); sister Sue and Ted Dobie; Jeff and Karen; sister-in-Law Lynne and Dave Bell; Ian, Chris, and Peter, and brother-in-law Doug Brandt (deceased); Jamie, Adam, and Kenneth.

You loved to travel and visit new places, from exploring close to home to hiking at different destinations all over the world. Before Dad passed away, you two always traveled together, meeting up with family or friends. You lived for the outdoors: walking, hiking, swimming, kayaking, waterskiing, exploring, gardening, and even stopping to smell the flowers in your backyard oasis. You were an extremely active woman. These are just a few of the activities you took part in that come to mind: walking daily; walking with the Prairie Pathfinders walking group; having fun with the Bridge Club group; reading books and comparing them with your friends at book club; and taking the time to sit in your backyard, watching the birds, butterflies, rabbits, and whatever other wildlife would stop by.

Baking was one of your passions, whether it be banana chocolate chip muffins, peanut butter chocolate brownies, homemade bread, chocolate chip cookies, birthday cakes, apple crisp, or something new to try with the family.

You were a chocoholic like your sister. Even up to a few weeks before your passing, you would enjoy a bit of chocolate each day. Perhaps a chocolate cupcake with your lunch or a piece of chocolate cake for breakfast. Thank you, Mom, for passing on the love of chocolate.

The summer months were spent with family and friends at the cottage, Clearwater Lake, Clear Lake, Lake of the Woods, and Victoria Beach. Fall and winter were spent at the farm, just outside Riding Mountain National Park. The last of our family holidays were spent in Mexico in early 2019 and early 2020 (before COVID) the Cook Islands with your sister.

You lived to see your three grandsons thrive and always loved being with them at their hockey games, soccer games, Christmas concerts, and school events. You always made one-on-one time for each of them. You always wondered what the boys would be when they grew up, their interests, and where they would end up. We hope you can find out from wherever you may be.

Thank you, Mom, for always making time for us, for providing us with so many wonderful places to explore, for having the family together on so many occasions, and for being an amazing person that so many people look up to. I am sure we all have stories to share about the time spent with you throughout the years we have known you.

Hugs and kisses to you, our darling mother, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, grandma, cousin, and friend.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Sorry to hear that Barb has passed. With learning to live alone since my husband, Ray, passed away, I did not keep in touch with Barb. She called me went Ray passed and that was our last contact. We met Barb when Bob was in Vet school with Ray. I can remember how happy Bob was when he met Barb.We teased him with lots of humour. It was wonderful that they found each other in Guelph. Ray and I knew Bob from U of M. Too bad that work gets in the way of life, as we concentrated on business and really never visited after Vet school. We certainly enjoyed many fun times in Guelph. • Sue, I was saddened to hear that your mom had died. She was a wonderful neighbour and I remember many chats with her over coffee at our homes on Parkwood. She also put on a few fabulous dinners for the curling team and spouses , when your dad was curling with Ron. I loved her enthusiasm, her positive uplifting spirit and her all encompassing smile! She will be missed by many, especially you and your family. - Posted by: Maureen Monson (Neighbour and friend) on: Dec 10, 2023

  • I did not know Barbara well or long because I had the honour of getting to know her while helping her with her kitchen and bathroom renovations. But in that fairly short time she left a great impression and she is not a person that I will forget. I felt so welcomed and trusted by her. I think she was quite non- judgemental. We shared our love of art on some of my visits to her home, because she had some interesting pieces that she gave me some background on, and she kept in touch with me after her projects were complete. She went cross country skiing or waking as many mornings as possible and shared tea and baking with me sometimes. I felt privileged that she shared her health challenges with me, and I admired her greatly. She was a great example for me and for many, I am sure. My deep condolences to her family whom she spoke to me of with pride often. - Posted by: Beverley Zimmerman (Friend) on: Dec 03, 2023

  • I remember Barbara and Bob very well. At their wedding, Barbara was absolutely beautiful with that wide, warm smile and vivacious way about her. She and Bob were so much in love, a love which lasted in such a special, enduring relationship. Barb was always giving, forgiving and kind. We spent many good times together at Vet parties over the years before I left to live in Toronto. Even then, I remember meeting Barb on plane trips going back and forth from Winnipeg to Toronto. We greeted each other like long lost friends. Always warm. Always Barb with that broad warm precious smile. My sympathy to the whole family. Without a doubt Barb will be missed by all who loved and knew her. May she rest in the arms of angels and be swiftly taken to eternal and everlasting life!
