Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH ANNE SCHIRMER
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Schirmer at St. Boniface Hospital.
She was predeceased by her parents, Ivy and Rod Horne; husband Perce (1998); and partner, Brian Grevstad (2020). She will be missed by brother David (Dianne); sister Jennifer (David); and nephews, Allan (Kim), Neil (Claire), Michael (Lindsay), and niece Andrea (Neil); as well as lifelong friends and her Horne and McMurray cousins. She loved her great-nieces and nephews, Kate, Alex, John, Julie, Brian, Ariana, Keiran, and Ellie. Her life was enriched by the Grevstad family, and in particular step-granddaughter, Olivia.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Elizabeth taught elementary school for a decade. Through the joy of travel, she met Perce Schirmer while travelling in the UK. They fell in love by writing letters. When they married, Elizabeth moved to Adelaide, Australia, where she lived happily and travelled the world. Once widowed, she returned to Canada in 2000 to renew her life in Winnipeg and spend time with her parents. She was able to again attend the McMurray family Christmas party and the Horne Thanksgiving party at the family cottage in Matlock.
Elizabeth showed remarkable courage throughout her life, taking significant risks for love and adventure. She always gave back to her communities of Adelaide, Australia, and Winnipeg. She enjoyed many volunteer opportunities including The Migration Museum in Adelaide, Ronald McDonald House in both Adelaide and Winnipeg, helping newcomers learn English, and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 4, at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church (525 Wardlaw Avenue). To watch the Celebration of Life, go to https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC

On behalf of all the members of the Down Under Club of Winnipeg, our deepest sympathies on the loss of Elizabeth, your sister, your family, your friend. She was a member of our club many years ago, and active as a volunteer at several of our Folklorama pavilions. Her love of Australia from afar never waned and she enjoyed the opportunities to stay connected with other Aussies and Kiwis here in Winnipeg. We lost touch with her in latter years, but occasionally caught up with her at other events. It was always a joy to chat with her, and we appreciate her involvement with our little group over the years. Rest easy, friend. - Posted by: Jenny Gates (Friend) on: Dec 04, 2023

I knew Elizabeth when working with Rod Horne, and met Ivy and the family over time. I recall the story of Elizabeth going to England and coming home with a story about meeting Perce. I recall when he met his father - in -law at the airport for the 1st time, he asked Rod if he could not call him Dad but just Rod. Her move to Australia was just the next step and we all followed the news and photos sent to the family. She was an interesting woman for the time and read that she continued to be an adventurous and active woman. I am sorry to hear of her passing and wish to offer my condolences to the families who will miss her. - Posted by: MONIQUE AQUIN GRABOSKI (ACQUAINTANCE YEARS AGO) on: Dec 03, 2023
