HENRY GOERTZEN

Peacefully on December 5, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer, Hank has gone home to be with the Lord.

Hank is survived by his wife Val, of 50 years. Left to cherish his memory are his three sons, Duane, Shane and Brent (Jane); four grandchildren, Brooke, Baylee, Matthew and Amber; five great-grandchildren, Katrina, Alexis, Johnny, Evan and Madison; along with four sisters, Agnes (Harold), Kaye (Henry), Erna and Nell. He was predeceased by his sister Elsie, brother Bernhardt+, brothers-in-law, Ernie, Ike and Aron; father Bernhardt and mother Aganeta.

Hank was born in Fuerstenwerder, Ukraine on August 1, 1943. His mother and six children came to Canada in 1948 and settled in Greendale, BC for many years. When his mother’s health was failing, Hank and his mother moved to Vancouver. Shortly after his mother passed, when Hank was 15, he lived with his sister Elsie in Winnipeg.

Hank was a successful and hardworking man who was respected for his work ethics as a butcher, meat manager, and consultant for 42 years at Canada Safeway.

Thank you to Dr. Rittberg at CancerCare for your excellent care and compassion. Thank you to palliative coordinator Sophie, palliative nurse Sean and nurses who tended to Hanks care at home, Dr. Tim Hiebert and nurses at Riverview for your excellent care. To our friends and family, thank you for all your prayers, support, phone calls and visits, and thank you to Pastor John and guitarist Steve.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, December 13 at 1:00 p.m., in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave. at Henderson Highway. Reception luncheon to follow.

  • Sending our deepest condolences to you Val and the Boys. So sorry we could not attend the service. Sending our love to you all 💕💕 Hank was a very kind and gentle man who watched our kids and grandkids growing up on the shores of Seech Lake. Catching frogs along the shores with Adi and Clay. We will cherish the great memories of Hank waving to us from the shore with his gentle smile, laughing and watching all the kids enjoying the lake sports and those visits by the campfires we had. We will always Cherish these memories with Hank and your family. We know he will be looking down on us from those twinkling stars that we all enjoy by the Lake. May you rest in peace Hank 💕. - Posted by: Wayne & Gwen Drul and family (Friends ) on: Dec 14, 2023
