KATHLEEN SCHALME

1932 - 2023

While being held in the arms of her best friend Marg, Kay quietly drew her last breath and went to be with her heavenly father on December 12, 2023, after a long courageous battle of Alzheimers.

She is survived by her best friend Margaret Stuart, her daughter Carol (Luc), her son Brian (Dona), as well as her very special niece Barb Galbraith (Jim), and family in Edmonton.

She is predeceased by her parents, Donald, and Gladys MacDougall, her brothers Dugald and Allistair, and baby sister Joyce.

Kay was born in Fort William (Thunder Bay), Ontario, on September 8, 1932. In 1954, she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a corporal clerk. This career took her on many adventures overseas, including England, Germany, and other European destinations. It was also how she met her husband, Edward Schalme, whom she married in 1958. Kay left the Forces in 1962, and a year later, in Winnipeg, welcomed her first child, Brian. It was four and half years later, they welcomed their daughter Carol, while stationed in Ottawa. Six months after Carol’s birth, Kay and her family returned to Winnipeg before being transferred to Germany from 1973 to 1978. Once back in Winnipeg, Kay joined the Provincial Government in 1980 as an administrative secretary until her retirement in 2000.

Kay pursued her love for classical music and attended the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for 45 years. She also enjoyed attending the opera, Manitoba Chamber music, as well as many performances at the Manitoba Theatre Centre.

Kay gave back to the community whenever possible, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels for five years. Her quick wit and sense of humour will forever be missed.

A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, on Wednesday, December 20 at 2:00 p.m.

We would like to thank Holy Family Nursing Home, especially St. Luke’s unit, for their love, compassion, and support for Kay during her difficult journey.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Holy Family Nursing Home, St. Luke’s unit, 165 Aberdeen Avenue, Wpg, MB.

Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Matthew 25:21

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Kay was my mentor at work and supported me through difficult moments in my life. Our relationship was very much a mother daughter relationship that flourished through our love of fine dining and dinner dates. Kay taught me strong work ethics that carried me through my career with the Manitoba Government. Unfortunately we lost touch with one another but she's always been in my thoughts and prayer. Godspeed my friend. Love Amanda - Posted by: Amanda Radul (Co-worker) on: Jan 22, 2024
