Coral McKendrick of Winnipeg passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on January 1, 2024, after an extended period of ill health.
Born on March 4, 1950, Coral was the daughter of the late James McKendrick and Mildred (Grantham) McKendrick.
Coral is survived by her nephew, Darren McLeod, and many close friends; several of these friends go back decades through her many career changes and volunteer roles. Coral was predeceased by her older sister Donna McKendrick in 2020.
Coral was a gifted writer. She wrote for the Winnipeg Tribune and freelanced for other publications over several years after graduating from the University of Manitoba. In later years before her health declined, she was active in Winnipeg’s Fringe Festival and co-founded and contributed to the Jenny Revue and awards. She was involved in the Winnipeg Folk Festival organizing the Green Room and was a playwright and producer of several theatre productions with the Manitoba Theatre Workshop, she was also a freelance theater, music, and restaurant critic.
Coral loved her cats and appreciated and enjoyed the close friendships she enjoyed over the many years. She was revered for her storytelling skills and for celebrating life by joining or hosting a good party.
Respecting Coral’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to the donation of your choice.
A celebration of Coral’s life will be held at a later date.

Thank you for the kind words about Coral. She was a one-of-a-kind and a force to be reckoned with and much loved even on her challenging days. :) It is hard to believe that in July of last year were celebrating her memory and her late sister, Donna McKendrick at the Little Brown Jug in Winnipeg. Thank to all of you that attended or posted here. It is deeply appreciated. Darren. - Posted by: Darren McLeod (Nephew) on: Aug 09, 2025

Coral was unique. I met her in our younger days, several decades ago. She loved to socialize and enjoy parties, many of which (with the help and support of her mother) were held downstairs in their home on McCalman Avenue. I still count as friends some of the people I met in that rec room. What happened down there will stay down there. I was also fortunate to participate as an "actor" in various amateur theatre productions that Coral organized. While many of us lacked talent, we were full of unstructured enthusiasm. The result was great entertainment, mostly for the participants rather than the audience. Coral, who did possess genuine talent, had to turn to other persons to make her mark on the local theatre scene. Rest in peace, Coral. As you exit the stage, be assured that you have left behind a wonderful collection of memories for many people. - Posted by: Eugene Szach (FRIEND) on: Jan 22, 2024

Rest in peace, dear Coral. All your theatre friends' memories of you are of your great joy, enthusiasm and your keen intelligence when directing or discussing a play. We will always think of you with love and respect. - Posted by: Terri Cherniack (friend) on: Jan 13, 2024
