Rick Braun-Janzen, age 62, passed away unexpectedly on January 8, 2024.
Rick was born on February 1, 1961, and raised on a farm near Arnaud, Manitoba. He moved to Winnipeg after high school, where he attended the University of Manitoba and obtained a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons). He then spent two years in Swift Current working at an accounting firm and then at Swift Current Bible Institute. He spent the next ten years in Abbotsford, working for several organizations, including Matsqui-Abbotsford Community Services. In 1996 he moved back to Winnipeg with his family where he worked for 27 years at Abundance Canada (previously Mennonite Foundation of Canada).
Rick attended high school at Mennonite Collegiate Institute where he met his future wife, Colleen Braun. They married in 1985 and subsequently had two children. Rick loved his family with all his heart and was the first to drop everything to offer his help. He cherished being a stay-at-home dad for three years, and more recently adored being a grandpa. He had a passion for the outdoors and loved running, kayaking, and hiking. He was active on many committees, including lengthy involvement with Winnipeg Mennonite Seniors Inc.
Rick is survived by his wife, Colleen, daughter Erin (Phil) and grandson Anderson, son Justin (Cecely), mother Margret, and mother-in-law Anne; siblings Lorna (Clarence), Sandi, Ted (Laela), and sisters-in-law Carla (Andre) and Val (Paul), and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is predeceased by his father Jake, father-in-law Ernie, and brother-in-law Carmine.
A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford St, Winnipeg, MB, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association or Mennonite Central Committee.
