GEORGE WILLIAM KERNAGHAN

On the morning of January 7, 2024 George William Kernaghan Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep.

George was born in Ballysax, Ireland in 1928. At age 17 George made his way to Canada with a few of friends on a ship from Liverpool to Halifax. He eventually settled in Churchill, MB, but he always kept his strong Irish roots.

In 1960 he married Shirley Ann Brydges, and together they raised two kids, George Jr. “Jordy” and Sean. George had an adventurous spirit and visited many places. His favourite pastime was to sit and have a beer and a cigarette with friends and family, chat for hours, tell stories and have a laugh.

George is survived by his wife Shirley , sons, Jordy (Linda) and Sean; grandchildren, Devin, Daniel, Michelle, Josh, and Ayla. George also leaves to mourn his brothers and sisters in-law, as well as nephews and nieces in both Canada and Ireland.

A private family service will take place, and a larger Celebration of Life event will take place this summer. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I had the pleasure of working with George at the Churchill Health Centre and knowing the family since I was young. George was such a joy to work with - always cheerful and quick with a joke. Condolences to his boys, their families and Shirley. - Posted by: Maureen Martin Osland (Friend ) on: Feb 03, 2024

  • My sincere condolences to George’s family. George was a great friend of mine back in my Churchill days - Posted by: Murray Harvey (Friend) on: Feb 03, 2024

  • Thoughts of sorrow and happiness to the Kernaghan Family, I met George working at the Churchill Health Centre from 1971-76. I can remember the typical Irish humor and easy-going manners that typified George and of the many interesting people whom I had the pleasure of meeting in Polar Bear Land, George stood out among them all. I send thoughts of happiness because I just know he would not have me shed a tear while I drink a toast of Jameson, straight up, in his memory. God Bless you all. - Posted by: Rick Dolenuck (co-worker) on: Feb 03, 2024

  • My deepest condolences, Shirley and family. Many fond memories of Churchill. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Cathy Chernichan (Friend of my parents Mike and Mary Chernichan) on: Feb 03, 2024

  • Mr Kernaghan was a wonderful person, always happy to see us as much has we loved his company, his stories about Churchill and his sense off humour will be missed! Drinking Irish coffee (more whisky than coffee) without “dad” will not be the same. We feel very lucky to have meet him and got to spend some time with him this Christmas. He will be forever in our heart. Rest in peace. - Posted by: David and Ana Peterkin (Friends ) on: Feb 03, 2024
