GERALD ANTHONY SANDELL

1929 - 2024

After a brief illness, Gerald passed away peacefully at Concordia Hospital February 3, 2024. He was born June 16, 1929 and is predeceased by his father Robert, and mother Elizabeth. He is survived by his sister, Helen Lipsey of Winnipeg.

Gerald was raised in Maryfield, Saskatchewan where he helped his parents manage the town hardware store. Following the passing of his father, he continued to support his mother in operating the Maryfield Hardware Store. Gerald took pride in supporting the business community by operating the town movie theatre, organizing Saturday night dances and helping to support local sports teams for many years. From a very young age Gerald loved trains. He was known to have memorized train schedules for all the main train companies in North America.

In 1990 he moved to Winnipeg to join his mother and served as her caregiver until her passing in 1996.

He will be missed by his friends and his neighbours from Shalom Gardens, the members of the Harrow United Church and the many cousins with whom he faithfully communicated.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 15th at Harrow United Church.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Gerald was always so great to stay in touch with us. He remembered every family member’s name and asked about them. He will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Ron and Laurie Westlake (Cousin) on: Feb 15, 2024

  • I met Gerald through my late husband Tom, who was a distant cousin to Gerald. Like many relatives, we mostly knew Gerald from lengthy phone conversations that touched on many topics, including relatives around the world, weather, sports, current events, past memories of his trips to Ontario and more. My daughters and I finally met Gerald in person when our family travelled west in the early 2000s. We enjoyed a visit to the Winnipeg zoo with Gerald (except for the mosquitoes) and dinner with Gerald and his sister Helen. My daughter Marni talked at length with Gerald when doing a university project on her family history and she also stopped by for a brief visit when work took her to Winnipeg once. I will miss my late evening phone calls from Gerald (not sure he remembered we were in different time zones). Rest in peace, Gerald. - Posted by: Jane Sandell (Cousin through marriage to Tom) on: Feb 11, 2024

  • I met Gerald through HC and while working in the Shalom Gardens for many years, I would see him bringing Tea and Cookies to many of the residents there. He was either doing shopping for people or helping with something. An absolutely lovely gentle man. He loved my Jeep and always asked me....do you still have your Jeep. May God Rest your soul dear Gerald. Jackie the Jeep girl! - Posted by: Jackie (Homecare) on: Feb 10, 2024

  • Our sincere condolences Hazel-Helen, and to others in Gerald's family. Gerald was a lifelong friend to our family and we always enjoyed his company in Maryfield and his phone calls more recently. He was genuinely concerned for all in our family and had a remarkable memory in keeping us informed of others from the Maryfield community. Our last conversation with him was about a month ago, and as always, we had about a 45 minute conversation about the past and present happenings. He was very concerned about the development of the BHP potash mine near Jansen and their plan to build new rail lines to join up with the existing CP and CN lines. RIP Gerald! - Posted by: Dave & Wendy Renwick (Friends) on: Feb 10, 2024

  • There are many of us who well remember that growing up in Maryfield with movies and dances with live bands would never have been a reality if not for the continuous and dedicated work of Gerald. He made our years fuller and happier with all of the effort he made to our small community and I know for certain that we will all take a moment to reflect on the good fortune we all experienced because he really cared about us. Thank you Gerald for all your generous and kind contributions to Maryfield. - Posted by: Susan Rusk (Friend) on: Feb 10, 2024
