Eugene (Evhen) Grenkiw, passed away suddenly after a brief illness on January 25, 2024.
Born on December 5, 1933 in Stanislawiw, Ukraine to Ferdinand Grenkiw and Maria Fleishhaker, Genek, as he was known to his family and friends, was orphaned early in his life and was taken in by his uncle Marian Grenkiw and his extended family which soon included a daughter, Alexandra. At the end of the war they immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba thanks to a sponsorship from Marian’s cousin, a farmer from an earlier immigration. After some years helping on the farm and going to school, Genek joined the rest of the family in town. He was hired at 18 by the Weststeel Co. and remained there until early retirement at 60. A participant in Plast, he also enjoyed hunting and especially fishing, maintaining a cottage on the Red River. He never married, living with Marian’s family until they all passed away. He then bought a home of his own, happily working on indoor and outdoor projects. After a serious heart attack in 2018 he moved to a seniors’ assisted living residence where he continued growing flowers on the balcony and decorating it for Canada Day. Although there were ten years between them, Alexandra always considered him a generous and loyal brother. She will miss him and their weekly phone calls. Her daughters Katherine and Christine have very fond memories of him spoiling them as children and only wish his visits had been more frequent. Everyone who knew him speaks of his kindness and optimism.
According to his wishes he has been cremated and his ashes repose at Korban Funeral Chapel until such time as they can be scattered in the fields.
