ALICE MARGARETA BOYCHUK

(nee DELBLANC)

1950 - 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alice Margareta Boychuk (nee Delblanc), age 74, of Winnipeg, MB. She passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024, at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, MB. She slipped away peacefully to her eternal Home in the presence of her sister Kristina.

Alice was predeceased by her husband Walter in April of 2017, as well as her son Matthew in March of 2023. The loss of Matthew especially impacted her greatly, but with her resilient nature, she continued to do life to the best of her ability.

Remaining to cherish her memory is her son Mark, along with Matthew’s children, who are her granddaughters, Brianna (Ivar) Hellervik; and Candice (Samuel) Flynn, as well as her great grandchildren Aria and Teddy. Also, mourning her loss are her sisters, Aimée from Stockholm; Kristina (Kent); and her brothers Christer (Nettie); Johnny (Hjordis); and Sigurd (Deanna), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Alice was born February 3, 1950, to Alice and Seigfried Delblanc, in Karlskrona, Sweden. She was affectionately nicknamed Lillan (little Alice), which she retained within the family circle, for her entire life.

Alice immigrated to Canada from Sweden, with her parents and older brothers Christer and Johnny, at the tender age of one year. After a lengthy journey across the ocean, their ship arrived on the east coast of Canada, and the family initially moved to the southeast side of Vassar, MB, for a short time, before moving to Arden, MB for three years. At that time, they returned to the north side of Vassar, where the family purchased a home and property of 160 acres and settled in.

Our Papa passed away in January of 1966. The following year, mainly due to financial hardship, Alice felt it was best to leave home and move to Winnipeg, MB, at the age of sixteen. She secured employment and eventually finished high school. She then moved on to complete her Nursing degree at the Red River Community College in 1975, now known as the Red River College. Alice started her nursing career in the Municipal Hospitals, and moved on to work at the Grace Hospital, as well as at the St. Amant Centre, both in Winnipeg.

Alice married Walter Boychuk in 1971, and they raised two sons, Matthew and Mark. She was a hard worker, and an amazing cook, and spent many hours canning vegetables every autumn as well. The whole family thoroughly enjoyed her canned beets and pickles. The Boychuk home was the ‘go to’ for the Holidays each year, where there was sure to be a feast of both Scandinavian and Ukrainian entrees. It was well worth the flight home, to both visit and dine, with Alice and her family!

Although Alice was an avid curler, she also enjoyed fishing, camping, and travelling. She was fluent in Swedish, English, as well as Sign language, which was very beneficial in her relationship with her son Mark. She was involved with teaching Swedish for many years, at the Vasa Lund Swedish Association and Club on Roblin Blvd, Winnipeg, MB, which I believe later became known as the Scandinavian Cultural Centre of Winnipeg, on Erin St.

It needs to be mentioned that Alice was the namesake for the Swedish book ‘Kara Alice!’ and was also highlighted in the Swedish television documentary ‘Delblanc’. Special moments!

Alice’s faith in Jesus began at the Full Gospel Church in Sprague, MB, at an early age. She also attended the Baptist Church in Vassar, MB, along with the Little Log Church north of Vassar, with her family. In later years, she attended the Calvary Temple, as well as the Grant Memorial Baptist Church, both located in Winnipeg, MB.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the ER Staff at the Grace Hospital, as well as to the Health Sciences Centre ICU. A special thank you to the HSC B2 Staff, where Alice spent her last twenty-four hours.

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life and Alice’s Homegoing will take place in the summer of 2024, with family and close friends.

Donations in memory of Alice Boychuk can be made to New Directions, 500 – 717 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB, R3G 0M8.

  • I knew Alice when they lived near OakBank and later in Winnipeg. She was a swede! and a hard working nurse, friendly and outgoing. We talked about our heritage as my family was from Norway. I bumped into her at Giant Tiger one day and we did not have time to chat! She always remembered my birthday and left a message on my phone ! Raising her family was not easy but she did her best, RIP Alice! - Posted by: Gladys Nielsen (Friend) on: Mar 10, 2024

  • Add on for Medical Staff who was with Alice Boychuk Delblanc. Thank you Grace Hospital ER Doctors and Staff for saving Alice long enough so her family could see, talk, hug and pray with Alice before her departure. And to Lee, Social Worker at Grace Hospital who reached out to Alice’s family. You made many phone calls to reach us,; many of us. Answered many questions. Thank you! - Posted by: Kristina Delblanc Howell (Sister to Alice) on: Mar 05, 2024

  • Precious (Lil'lan) Alice, we grew up almost inseparable in a small village. We picked berries deep in the forest, planted vegetable gardens in the summer, we played Hop Scotch, 7-up, and Baseball to name a few. We climbed our huge Maple Trees front of our house. We hung out on those side by side trees for hours. We covered each other with Hay using a Hay Fork. I am so sorry I accidentally punctured your scalp that 1 time; just minutes after you warned me. We harvested the Vegetable gardens in early Autumn. In winter we built snowmen, had snowball fights, and crossed Country skied (proficiently made by Papa) on the open acres on our property in Vassar. Then home to have a homemade Cinnamon buns and Hot Cocoa drink. You were so kindhearted, generous, smart and the best sister I could ever be blessed with. I enjoyed many visits we had in our Adult life on the phone & in person. I miss you immensely. Death, the last enemy Christ will destroy has lost its sting. I am thankful that I grieve; not as those who have no hope. Till we meet again; enjoy the Countryside you missed so much when living in Winnipeg. I love you with my whole ❤️ heart. - Posted by: Kristina Delblanc Howell (Sister) on: Mar 05, 2024
