EVELYN (LYN) J. STEPHEN

October 13, 1938 - February 23, 2024

Lyn, peacefully passed away on February 23, 2024.

Lyn is survived by first cousins (mother's side) Gill Holland, Penticton, BC, Penny Cummine, Kenora ON and April Wright, Salt Spring Island Frank Holland, Abbotsford BC, and Margarite Randall, Sudbury ON. First Cousin (Father's side) Carolyn Lawrenson, Sunderland, ON. And her long-term friends Allison Cowell and Lyn Stevenson.

Lyn was born in Redditt, ON. Her father was the CNR Station Master. With no high school in Redditt, Lyn left to attend Balmoral School in Winnipeg where she lived in residence. In 1960, Lyn graduated as an R.N. from Winnipeg General Hospital. She earned a BN from McGill University and an MSc. Nursing from Boston University. Her nursing career took her to Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal, QC. In the 1980’s, Lyn returned to Winnipeg. With a life-long interest in books and libraries, Lyn attended Red River College to obtain her Library Technician Certificate. Thus started a new career back to Balmoral School, the very school she attended in her youth. Upon retirement, Lyn volunteered as the Archivist at Balmoral School. Lyn was a class rep for her "60-B" Nursing class for a number of years. Lyn was a kind, quiet, astute, supportive friend.

Growing up, around Kenora ON, Lyn developed a strong passion for the beauty of Lake of the Woods. In retirement, she bought a cabin on Longbow Lake, ON. She was there for the next 10 summers, where she spent her time, surrounded by nature's beauty.

A heart-felt thank you is extended to all the Resident Care Staff at the Courtyards/Arbours for their caring and compassionate support over these past few years.

Internment will occur alongside her parents at a later date, at Lake of the Woods cemetery, Kenora, ON. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the “Balmoral Hall School Tribute Fund” in Lyn’s honour.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • I'm very sad to hear about Lyn. Ms Stephens was the first person to support my career path in libraries. Her infectious enthusiasm for delving into the past, spending afternoons together at Aikins House exploring old photos, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the importance of preserving history. I am very grateful for her guidance and mentorship. - Posted by: Caroline Monnin (Balmoral Hall School) on: Apr 11, 2024

  • A wonderful lady...we met as cottage neighbours at Longbow Lake. Such fond memories of sitting and chatting on her deck there in the morning or in the evening enjoying the beautiful sunsets. I feel so blessed to have known her. - Posted by: Norma Clory (Friend) on: Mar 08, 2024

  • On behalf of the Winnipeg General Hospital/Health Sciences Centre Nurses’ Alumni we extend our sincere condolences to Lyn’s family and friends on her recent passing. Lyn was an active, engaged member of our Alumni Executive over many years. In the early to mid nineties Lyn, along with Anne Crossin, another Alumni member, took on the monumental task of unpacking, sorting, identifying and labelling the many historical artifacts of the hospital and alumni that had been packed away in boxes for many years. Lyn’s background as a Library Technician and her volunteer role as Archivist at Balmoral Hall School were invaluable in taking on this task. These ladies established the foundations of the Health Sciences Centre Museum/Archives which continues to preserve and celebrate the history of the hospital and the people who were part of that history over many years. Lyn’s family, friends and alumni members will remember her and the contributions she made during her life. - Posted by: Carol Galbraith (Friendship Convenor, Winnipeg General Hospital/Health Sciences Centre Nurses’ Alumni) on: Mar 07, 2024

  • So saddened to hear of Lyn’s passing. Lyn was a great asset to BH and I always enjoyed chatting with her. A lovely lady! She will be missed. - Posted by: Sharon Brown (Former BH staff (89-05)) on: Mar 05, 2024

  • I had the privilege of getting to know Lynn while I was teaching at Balmoral. I knew she came in on Tuesday’s so I would often go upstairs to chat about things in general, and inevitably we would end of talking about her true passion, the history of Balmoral Hall. I learned a great deal about Balmoral’s past through those conversations. She was a lovely, kind soul and and I was very fortunate to have met her. She will be missed. - Posted by: Rhonda Smith (Friend) on: Mar 05, 2024

  • This is very sad news. My condolences to all, Lyn was an amazing woman. I always looked forward to our Tuesday and sometimes Thursday chats when she would come volunteer her time at the school. She was very passionate and a wealth of knowledge about all things BH. If you got the chance to meet and talk with her, it was special. - Posted by: Amanda K (Balmoral Hall School ) on: Mar 05, 2024

  • Lyn was passionate about the history of Balmoral Hall and it was contagious. With steadfast determination she would seek out items of significance and tuck away in safe keeping until a space was secured for an official archives which she single handedly set up. We are forever indebted to her passion and foresight. - Posted by: Tina Alto (Balmoral Hall School) on: Mar 04, 2024

  • My big (older) cousin. Was always jealous of her being able to go to Balmoral. Was helpful when I first moved to a strange city, Montreal. Always a welcome port in Winnipeg for an overnight stay. - Posted by: Gill Holland (cousin) on: Mar 03, 2024
