Tribute by her husband Raymond for:
My dear Martha, age 72, passed through the pearly gates of Heaven into the loving arms of Jesus, her Savior, to live in paradise with Him.
Martha was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her family: husband Raymond, three children and one grandson. She is also survived by one brother and six sisters, numerous in-laws, their families, and countless friends.
She has now been reunited in heaven with our three children that predeceased her: Kristin, Jason, and Renée; three sisters; her parents, Henry and Tina Reimer; and parents-in-law, Willie and Elizabeth Dueck.
She loved her Lord Jesus and devoted her life to follow Him. She was baptized in Mennville Church on her confession of faith at age 14. She volunteered as a church Sunday School teacher and as a cook at Beaver Creek Bible Camp.
Martha was energetic, one of a kind, and irreplaceable. Her passing leaves a big void in all our lives. We are blessed to have shared our lives with her. We will always cherish our memories of Martha.
Martha grew up on a farm near Riverton and always helped with farm chores. Many of the chores were strenuous. In order to fill the granary to the top she and her sister had to move the grain away from the inflow by hand, which was a loud and dusty job.
Growing up, our families were part of the same community. Martha soon caught my eye, and I began seeking her affections. Here is a poem I wrote for Martha when I was 16 years old. It was published in the Manitoba Cooperator:
Martha my dear, I love you I do
I know that you love me too
And where God leads two people in love
On such will his blessings fall from above
Though storms may surround us in life
May between us never be an echo of strife
But may God's love to us be sent
To each of us one hundred percent.
Martha was not impressed by this gesture. I was teased mercilessly and I almost lost her in the process.
Martha and I were united in Holy Matrimony in July 1971. She was 19 and I was 21. Our marriage commitment was on a picture Martha painted and mounted on the wall behind the head table at our wedding. It had a verse from Psalm 48: "For this God is our God forever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end."
We loved each other for more than 52 years. Through the many difficult times, she held onto Jesus' promise to walk with her through those dark days. After our firstborn son died, Martha's process to deal with the pain and grief was inspiring, creating lifelong blessings for many, including myself. She produced and presented slide shows based on Psalm 104 and 148 to church groups. During our daughter Renée's hospitalization, she had a very hard time accepting it and then one day she thought of this verse: "Be still and know that I am God." After that she felt God was in control. After Renée died, Martha spent many hours blogging about her joys and sorrows on MarthaDueck.com. It was a way for her to process her pain, and it helped many others along the way. I invite you to check it out.
I thank the Lord for blessing me with such a wonderful companion. She was a source of joy, strength, and inspiration in my life's journey. Her passion for God's Word has been a constant source of energy in our work together at LifeLight, assisting with the editing and publication of more than 250,000 Scriptures. Martha was an accomplished writer and photographer. She spent many hours editing and selecting photos for the latest publication of "LifeLight for the Nations" Please get your free copy at www.BiblesForToday.com.
She loved nature, hiking, and caring for her plants and flowers in the house and around the yard. We enjoyed travelling the world as a couple and as a family. We took a European trip from London to Rome in 2000. Australia, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, and India were some of our other destinations through the years.
Martha was very artistic and worked with stained glass, oil and acrylic painting. She enjoyed alcohol inks and created many paintings that she gave away to friends. She knitted dozens of items for family and friends and made toques for preemies. She was an accomplished quilter and seamstress, too.
She was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 2016. In June 2022 she knew she had cancer again but could not get surgery until December, by which time the curable endometrial cancer had spread and become terminal.
After enduring a year of countless CancerCare visits for chemo, radiation and immunotherapy, Martha spent 143 days in hospital after knee surgery. She had many little miracles including intestinal healing. She was in a great deal of pain for more than a year, but never complained. Thank you to the caring staff at St. Boniface Hospital palliative care ward.
Martha has been released from her pain, and she is dancing on the streets of Glory with Jesus. She passed very peacefully at 4:30 p.m. on March 1st. The look on her face was pure peace. Some of that peace is in me now. She is at peace, but I miss her excruciatingly. I weep.
The funeral is at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at Eastview Community Church, 315 Maxwell King Drive, Winnipeg. It will be livestreamed on the church channel at www.eastview.org. Faspa fellowship to follow.
There will also be a short service with faspa after the private interment on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. in Mennville EMC Church north of Riverton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to www.BiblesForToday.com or Compassion.ca in memory of Martha.
Circumstances are not the measure of God's love; the Cross is. We are citizens of heaven travelling through earth. Martha was God's special possession.
