Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELEANOR RUNA SCHELLENBERG
Surrounded by family, Eleanor passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 29, 2024 at Riverview Health Centre.
Eleanor is survived by David, her adoring husband of 65 years; sisters, Helen and Barbara; brother Solberg; loving children, Steven (Eve), Shirley (Wilf), Christopher (Shelley) and Michael; and her beloved grandchildren, Kristjan (Michaela), Amelia, Signy, Sam, Ava and Daniel.
Eleanor, the second daughter of Stefan and Runa, grew up in Riverton on the Icelandic River. At 18, she moved to Winnipeg, where she studied at United College (BA) as part of the class of 1954, and finished off with a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Manitoba. During her school years, she developed a loyal and loving group of friends, known affectionately as the Sparling Darlings. It was as a new social worker with the Children's Aid Society of Winnipeg that she met Dave, and she continued to work in the field into her 60s. Eleanor and Dave married in 1959.
Eleanor loved to laugh with her family and many lifelong friends and was known for her wry wit, her gracious spirit and her deeply compassionate heart. She was a dedicated volunteer in her community, an avid reader, a bridge player and theatregoer, and she always enjoyed a good visit over a cup of coffee at her home in Windsor Park. Eleanor spent her summer in Hnausa on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, surrounded by cherished relatives and friends in a cottage that rings out with music and laughter.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the care workers that provided such comfort to Eleanor over her final years at home.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the cottage this coming summer.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity in her honour.

Dear Eleanor, I'm deeply saddened to have only just learned of your passing on February 29th, 2024. I'm filled with regret for not having acknowledged your departure and not being able to say goodbye. Though we didn't see each other often, your presence in my life was always meaningful and impactful. Thank you for being my godmother. I'll never forget the love and support you showed me at every important milestone - my wedding, the birth of my daughters, and Leah's wedding. Your guidance and advice also played a significant role in shaping my career. Your influence on my life was appreciated and I'll always be grateful for the times we had together. I hope you knew how much I appreciated you and Dave, even from a distance. I was also very excited when I finally learned how we were related! Rest in peace Eleanor. Dave and family, we are so sorry for your loss. With sincere condolences and fond memories. Love Pat and Bob McVeigh - Posted by: Pat McVeigh (Relative) on: Jan 19, 2025

I first met Eleanor in the 1960's when she became a member of a bridge club to which I belonged. Over the years we had many a good time together, along with Dave, and I am profoundly saddened by their loss. - Posted by: Katherine Sullivan (friend and fellow bridge player) on: Mar 09, 2024
