It is with immense sadness we announce the unexpected passing of John on February 19, 2024 at the age of 72.
He is survived by his sister, Leslie Young; and brother-in-law, Brad. He is predeceased by his parents, Anna and Jozef Halek.
There will be a memorial service Friday, April 5, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent at Academy.

Just heard the sad news of John passing away. I lived across the street and down a few doors from the Halek family on McKenzie in the north end of Winnipeg in the 60s. We became close friends especially in the late 60s. I moved to Toronto in mid 1970s and lost track of John until I retired in 2014. Can't remember how I found him living in Orleans, Ontario, probably through the internet. We had been speaking on the phone or texting about twice a year up to last Christmas. One story I have to tell was that we made a $100 bet likely in the late 60s about who would get married first. I lost the bet as I got married in 1974. I tried to pay him in around 2014 when he reminded me of the bet. He refused to let me pay the $100. I have plenty of good memories from the old northern days.
