JOHN (JACK) DEMPSTER PARRINGTON

October 24, 1933 – March 5, 2024

With deep sadness we announce the passing of Jack who died peacefully, at home, with his family by his side.

He was predeceased by his mom, Christine and dad, Clarence who he loved to share stories about and loved with all his heart as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law Tom and Anne Foster.

Left to cherish Jack’s memory are Maureen, his wife of 61 years; his children, Lorraine (Brad), Rob (Angele), Doug (Shane); grandchildren, Danielle (Wes), Kyleigh (Breck), Nolan and Carter; and great-grandchildren, Penelope and Winston. Also mourning his loss are brother-in-law Jim Foster (Mary) and his nephews, Tim and Paul and their families.

Dad was born in Winnipeg but grew up in Toronto where he blossomed into a multisport athlete earning a track scholarship to the University of Houston. Dad tied the world record for the 100 meters, running 10.2 on July 21, 1956, and followed it up by competing in Melbourne at the 1956 Olympics.

Dad would tell you that his greatest accomplishment was being married to mom and building a great family together through hard work, joy, laughter, and continuing the legacy with his grandkids and their families. We have all battled each other at some point but mutual respect, a lot of sarcasm and laughter went a long way.

Dad loved his work life in Assiniboine South School Division as a teacher, Phys-ed supervisor and Vice Principal.

He was one of the founders of the Assiniboine Optimist Track Club and loved to work with his athletes and other coaches.

His lessons of integrity, hard work delivered with passion and humour have set a high standard that we all try to live up to every day.

We will love you forever and will cherish every memory of you today, tomorrow, and always.

“Hey dad, mom says you are still wrong”.

A Celebration of Life will be Thursday April 4, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue Winnipeg, MB.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to Winnipeg Optimist Athletics - e-transfer to paymentswoa@gmail.com or a charity of choice.

  • We are so sorry to hear of Jack’s passing but so fortunate to have benefited from his contributions to track via WOA. I was so happy to meet him when he was honored at the Boeing Classic and to let him know how much I also enjoyed playing soccer with Rob and hockey with Doug.
