HELEN JANZEN

(nee KRAHN)

May 19, 1927 - March 18, 2024

With sadness and loss, we share the news that on the evening of March 18, wrapped in our love and gratitude for her life, our sweet Mum, Mama, and Oma, left this world peacefully, in the comfort of her home at age 96.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Ellie, daughter-in-law Elly, grandchildren, Aaron (Leslie) and Danae (Matt), brother-in-law Harry, sister-in-law Erika and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Winnipeg and Alberta. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and son, Jakob and Victor, brother Dietrich, sisters, Cathy Tiessen and Nettie Krahn and her parents, Anton and Helene Krahn.

Mum was born on May 19, 1927, in Osterwick, Russia, a Mennonite settlement in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Ukraine. In 1943 turbulent times forced her family to take refuge in Germany and then eventually immigrate to Canada in 1948. Her family settled in Winnipeg and were very grateful to embark upon a new life of freedom and opportunity. In 1950 Mum married Jakob Janzen and they were blessed with two children, Ellie (b. 1951) and Victor (b.1959).

Mum worked so hard in partnership with her husband to support him in his new business, and to build a comfortable home life for her children. They were strongly connected in their faith to the North Kildonan Mennonite Church where they both remained members throughout their lives.

When the grandchildren were born, Mum’s heart and world opened up more than ever before. She had a great love for Aaron and Danae, and quickly embraced the role of a caring, supportive Oma, which she demonstrated to her last day.

We would like to express our gratitude to the Palliative Care Team and Dr. Johnson and Dr. Daennick for their kind and gentle care, and to the “Army of Angels” who lovingly cared for Mum making it possible for her to stay in her home.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at Friends Funeral Chapel. Interment in Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the Mennonite Central Committee.
