Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALLAN JOHN CHAPMAN
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Allan Chapman, beloved Dad, husband, Papa, brother, uncle, neighbour and friend. Dad passed unexpectedly but peacefully in his home at the age of 81.
Allan was predeceased by his parents, Victoria and Albert Chapman; Granny Eva Chapman; mother-in-law Stella Pawloski; and his wife of 48 years, Jeanne. Many friends and family are left to mourn his loss, including his brother, Donald; two daughters, Jennifer (Craig) and Cheryl (Trevor); and his four cherished grandsons, Jack, Colin, Blake and Brody.
Allan was born in Winnipeg and shared many happy memories growing up in the north end hanging out with friends, and working on cars and motorcycles in their garage. In 1969, he married Jeannie, the love of his life. Soon after, they built a house in Bird’s Hill. It was a place they both adored and became their sanctuary to raise a family, enjoy nature, and pursue their hobbies. Together, they lovingly raised their girls, tended to the yard and garden, contributed to the community, and built life-long connections with the most wonderful neighbours.
The family cottage in Clandeboye was like a second home for Allan and it held a special place in his heart. Fishing, boating, building a cabin, bonfires, snowmobiling, landscaping, enjoying the serenity of nature, barbequing, playing with his kids, spitting sunflower seeds on the dock at sunset and sharing good times there with friends and family made him so happy.
Al took great pride in everything he did and had an incredible work ethic. From his first job at Loblaws, to working at his Dad’s business (Chapco), and eventually settling into his career as a firefighter, he was dedicated to people and his work. He made a home and family with the City of Winnipeg Fire Department and retired as a Captain after 30 years on the job. He loved the camaraderie of the firehall and shared many stories of heroism, heartbreak, and shenanigans.
Like a true fireman, he was a caretaker in every way and loved making things better. He could fix anything and was fascinated with mechanics and motors. Dad’s passion was cars and he was happiest cruising in his T-birds or working on them in his shop. He loved sharing his hobby with friends and family at car and motorcycle shows. His brother and best friend, Donald will always hold a special place as his "crew chief" and co-pilot for life.
Allan’s love and dedication to his family were incomparable, but his kindness enveloped everyone he met. He especially had a soft spot in his heart for kids, and his grandsons were his pride and joy. He loved cheering them on at sports games, teaching them, celebrating their accomplishments, pulling pranks and laughing with them. His gentleness and enthusiasm to be childlike made him everyone’s Papa. His garage wall holds many memories where he attentively marked the height of all the neighbourhood kids (and pets), reveling in how much they’d grown.
Dad will always be remembered for his big heart, gentleness, and generosity. He loved nature, animals (especially his grand-dogs and cats), silly sayings and Chinese food. He was a shining example of how to live a good life and his passing leaves a giant hole in the hearts of everyone that knew him.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at St. Boniface Hospital; as well as Ethical Death Care for their compassionate services and photo-biography to honour our Dad, accessible through the "tributes" link at the bottom of this obituary. A huge hug of gratitude also goes out to all of our friends, neighbours, coworkers, and family for your outpouring of love and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Firefighter’s Burn Fund would be greatly appreciated.

I met Al in the late 1950s and that was the start of a life long friendship. We shared many happy times as kids and adults, playing with cars and working at the Fire Department.
