CAROLE ANN ABBOTT

November 26, 1935 - April 3, 2024

It is with great sadness that on April 3, 2024, after a brave battle with cancer, we lost our dear mother Carole Ann Abbott. Carole walked through life with resilience, grace, and the most beautiful smile. With heavy hearts we move forward honouring Mom’s spirit.

“Nonnie” as she is fondly known, will be deeply missed by her three children and their spouses, Sydney Abbott and Philippe Colombé, Renée and Leigh Quinn, and Drew and Lana Abbott; her seven grandchildren, Claire Fourmentin (François) and Margaux Colombé, Drew Quinn (Olivia), Madeleine Deadrick (Nick), Shannon Sullivan (Michael), Aidan and Eric Abbott; and her seven great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Louise, Georgie, Charlotte, Natalie, Amelia and Edward. Carole was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Dr. Clifford Edward Abbott.

Carole was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and at the age of four, she and her mother Elsie moved to Calgary for five years while her father Major George Colclough was serving the country in the Second World War. Upon his return, the family moved to Banff, Alberta where they welcomed her sister Judie. In Banff, she developed her love of horses and skiing, two lifelong passions she passed on to her children and grandchildren. In high school, when not hiking up the side of Mt. Norquay with skis hoisted over her shoulders or exploring the trails on her horse Wally, Carole worked as a telephone switchboard operator. This job opened her eyes to a world beyond her hometown’s majestic mountains and peaceful rivers. Carole was “smart as a whip” and it was no surprise that she excelled in school and would move forward to seek many new adventures. In her lifetime she sought every opportunity to travel always with a fun and open spirit.

Carole furthered her education and graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in nursing. This is where she met her husband Edward Abbott - they moved from Edmonton to Cleveland and back to Winnipeg as he finished his training. Mom, never one to sit idle, stayed busy raising her young family, volunteering with the Junior League, learning the French language, golfing at St. Charles, and training her string of Standard Poodles. She loved to entertain and was a fabulous cook but was most known for her beautiful and delicious desserts. She was also an avid gardener and her rock gardens and giant begonias at the cottage at Lake of the Woods were like none other. Eventually, Carole went back into nursing and taught a new generation at St. Boniface Hospital in the 1970s and 1980s. Well ahead of her time, she mastered the latest computer, and the family laundry room was dubbed “mom’s computer room” as she would sit in there for hours writing codes.

Carole made many friends along the way that she cherished. These lifelong friendships were formed in Winnipeg, at the cottage in Kenora and Naples, Florida. Her Bears Paw community was a lifeline after losing her husband while only in her 50s. Friendships were forged through games of tennis, golf, bridge, and walking her dog. A talented crafter, Carole will be fondly remembered for the multitude of Christmas stockings that she lovingly knit for her family and close friends. Her elegant style and her scarves were her calling card. She will also be remembered for her devotion to family and friends and for her generosity. Until the very end, she was a woman of strength and love.

Mom’s greatest legacy was her summers at the lake spent with her family who travelled from near and far to be together. Year after year, the cousins spent hours cray fishing, sailing, swimming, sharing lunch on the dock and becoming the best of friends.

Mom will remain forever cherished, remembered, and loved.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I met Carole in July 1966 when I came from France and joined the Abbott family as an 'au paire'. Carole was always very understanding, supportive and helpful as I did not even speak a word of English then. She introduced me to Canadian way of life and was a great mentor for me. I will always be very grateful to her for that. Then I moved on but maintained a meanigful relationship with her and the family. She always had a great smile. She was an excellent communicator and very caring. She will be dearly remembered and missed very much. My sincere sympathy to the famil of Carole. • Drew, Lana, Aidan, Eric, and the Abbott family. We were so blessed to meet Carole back in early 2005 when we moved from Toronto to Winnipeg and as luck would have it, Carole was our neighbor. We were met with her beautiful smile and warm welcome, along with her Statuesque Poodle, Lafitte. Soon after we had settled, Carole introduced us to Drew, Lana, Aidan, & Eric and what a gift that was. Our daughter Sydney was born in October 2005 and since then we have been so blessed to enjoy your friendship and special moments together. We will always hold Carole in our thankful hearts as her generous spirit brought so much joy into our lives. Sending you all our love and sincere condolences. - Posted by: Greg, Lisa, and Sydney Magennis (Family Friends) on: Apr 07, 2024

  • Renee and family, UI am so sorry to hear about your mother. Sending you all healing and loving thoughts during this difficult time. I did know Carole well at all, but I do remember her beautiful smile and generosity of spirit. With affection, Liz - Posted by: Liz Turner (Lake of the Woods Crew) on: Apr 06, 2024

  • Carole was a deeply valued friend. We walked together, played bridge together, and in later years shared many meals together. We shared lots of fun emails. She was a very intelligent conversationalist and had a great sense of humor. I will miss her greatly. - Posted by: Lynn Stevens (Close friend) on: Apr 06, 2024

  • Dear Sydney and all the Abbott Family: My deepest sympathy on the loss of your wonderful mum. I remember her well even though the conversations were brief with lots of others around and if I recall correctly we were either skiing of at LOTW! The memories of her are special. As always, Sidney. - Posted by: Sidney Q Macaw (Family Friend) on: Apr 06, 2024
