JACK VORAUER

Jack Vorauer passed away peacefully on March 26, 2024, at the age of 87.

Born in Winnipeg on February 3, 1937, to John and Anne Vorauer, he was their firstborn. It would be about ten years later before his sister Lynda and then sister Eileen were born, and they were important to him throughout his whole life.

He married Sylvia Thack on September 18, 1965. Soon after, their first daughter Jacquie was born and then his daughter Amber. Once they welcomed their son Gordon several years later, their family was complete.

In 1969 he got a job in Vancouver, BC, and moved his family to North Vancouver, BC. He remained close to his family in Winnipeg, and every summer he would put the kids in the back of the station wagon - which always broke down at least once – and they would spend magical summers at Lake Winnipeg at Grandma Thack’s cottage with Sylvia’s late sister June Boyd and her late husband Gary and their two children, Keith and Susan. They moved a few times around North Vancouver and then they moved into a home that Jack and Sylvia designed themselves; it was in a beautiful mountainside location. In 1978 they moved out to sunny White Rock where they bought a spacious home on a large lot. Their neighbours were cows and horses. Jack was a dedicated husband and father and he loved to play games – especially poker and bridge – with the family all night long. He also enjoyed taking his family skiing at Hemlock Valley and Whistler. He was always coming up with inventions and even had a small book published. He loved to golf with his wife Sylvia, and they cherished spending time with their children and many grandchildren – Jacquie and her husband Dan and their children, Noah and Vivian, Amber and her husband Paulo and their children, Brady, Brooke, Hope, and Tia, and Gordon, his children, Shyan, Daralyn, and Draven, and his wife Jennifer. He enjoyed many happy years with his wife Sylvia until her sudden passing in 2015 right before what would have been their 50th wedding anniversary. They returned to Winnipeg in 2009 and deeply enjoyed reconnecting with family and friends in Winnipeg at that time. Jack lost his father many years ago but was fortunate that his mother Anne didn’t pass away until 2005 just before her 95th birthday.

Jack will be remembered for his love of life and love of fun and dedication to his wife, sisters, children, grandchildren, and family.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Jack gave me my first adult job straight out of high school in 1978, to work at PCL (formerly Poole Construction). He was an amazing boss, so kind and humble, and had such a great sense of humor. He was passionate about football and hockey, and each year we worked together on The Great Hockey Race during the Stanley Cup playoffs. His enthusiasm was infectious. He was also passionate about sweets and would often raid people's desks looking for candy. Every holiday, I would leave treats on his desk, incognito. He never figured out who the St. Paddy leprechaun was, or the Easter Bunny, The Great Pumpkin, Santa's Elf, etc. until I left the Richmond office and moved back to Alberta. I still work for PCL this day and often think of Jack fondly. I was sorry to hear of his passing. My sincerest condolences to his family. - Posted by: Caryl Laitinen (former employee ) on: May 23, 2024

  • Jack was a dear friend of my father Lawrence (Lorry) Lesyk. Every year, Jack would send his score card of his first round of golf in the mail to my dad. Just to rub it in that out west, he was out golfing and in Winnipeg, my dad was still shovelling snow off his driveway. - Posted by: Christine Peers (Family friend) on: May 16, 2024
