SUSAN NORRIS
Susan passed away peacefully on April 29, 2024, at the age of 99 years and seven months after a long and beautiful life.
She leaves to mourn her daughter Janet Norris; and two sons, Larry Norris (Karen Norris) and Garth Norris (Anne Marie Downey); four grandchildren, Michael (Laura), Lysa (Paul), Daniel (Catherine) and Carly (Sean); four great-grandchildren, Maggie, Will, Ava and Harrison; brother Peter; along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Susan was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Allan, in 2006; as well as her two sisters, (Annie and Leona); and two brothers, (Ed and Henry).
Born to Peter and Helena Falk September 26, 1924 in Santa Clara, Chihuahua, Mexico after her parents moved there in 1922 to keep practicing their Mennonite faith. Returning to Canada when she was five months old, Susan then spent her early years in the Lowe Farm, Manitoba area. After graduating high school in Lowe Farm, she moved to Morris, Manitoba where she took up a position as a bank teller with the Bank of Montreal.
It was in Morris that she met her eventual husband Allan and they were married in Winnipeg, December 15, 1945. They were blessed with their three children and Susan took on the full-time role as homemaker and mother, ensuring that her family was always well-fed and clothed and experienced all the joys of growing up in a safe, secure, and loving home.
Susan was an incredibly active and community involved person, volunteering at her children’s schools and then for over 30 years with the Manitoba Museum’s Education Department as a school program interpreter. She was also actively involved with the Transcona United Church Women’s Organization and her Transcona Neighbors Social Club for over 50 years.
Susan was always an incredibly curious person, wanting to learn more about the world around her and thus she loved reading (a passion which she passed on to her children) and travel. She and Allan took numerous cruises and international trips (before it was a common thing to do) and used their tent and trailer extensively throughout their lives.
Her greatest passion after caring for her family, was her garden and she was well-known for her incredible vegetable and flower harvests. Her biggest disappointment as her health deteriorated in later years was having to give up her gardening.
As many people noted over the years, Susan was the “glue” that kept family connected, first her own brothers, sisters, and in-laws, and then her own children. Her greatest joy was “doing for others” and that is why she always kept family close and had a large circle of devoted friends. Despite numerous health challenges in her later years, she never gave up on life, always strong, doing what she was able whether that was exercise classes, playing cards or attempting to continue her gift as a seamstress through sewing, knitting or crochet.
She was always there when someone else was in need and she will be dearly missed. A very special thank you to the wonderful, caring staff at Calvary Place for the dignity, respect and love Susan received in her final years.
At Susan’s request, there will be no formal funeral or memorial service. Cremation has taken place.
In acknowledgement of Susan’s life, donations may be made in her name to the Transcona Memorial United Church, the Manitoba Museum or a charity of one’s choice.
