Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM JAMES (BILL) LAIRD
On April 23, 2024, at St Boniface Hospital, Bill passed away peacefully at the age of 97. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Martha Laird, his sisters, Margaret Wood, Jessie Gibson, Phyllis Laird and his beloved Cairn Terrier, Geordi.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Teena, “the daughters,” Marion Guinn (Rodger), Heather Sexton (Murray), Karen Laird (Wes), Joedi Pruden (Mark) and grandchildren, Ryan Merner (Brentlee), Meagan Klassen (Paul), Jeff Sexton (Nickie), Robyn Holunga (Paul), Lexi Schroeder, Cole Pruden (Julie), Morgan Mason (Chris) Max Pruden and Josh Pruden. He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Sydney, Abigail, Emma, Alice, Austin, Tatya-na, Sophie, Hugo, Eiden, Ellis, Hallie, and Rowen.
Bill was born in Winnipeg and raised in the Elmwood area (613 Castle Avenue) and lived at that address for almost 80 years, residing at Cathedrale Manor at the time of his passing. He worked as a Pattern Maker in the various foundries in Winnipeg and enjoyed a lengthy retirement. He was a proud Canadian with deep Scottish roots. Despite a lifelong hearing loss, he lived an independent and active life. Dad loved life; he was outgoing, sociable, and most notably charming. Family was important to him, and he took great pride in his daughters and grandchildren and loved watching over his great-grandchildren.
Over the last few years, due to health reasons Bill and Teena lived separately and during this time, Bill fully embraced his participation in the Prime program at Misericordia Hospital through which he made many good friends.
The family would like to thank Candace and the staff at Prime, Mitongo from Home Care and the staff at Cathedrale Manor all of whom helped our Dad to live an active and independent life right to the end.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, May 27, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent with reception to follow.
