JOZSEF NAGY

September 1, 1927 - April 12, 2024

Born and educated in Debrecen, Hungary, Joe came to Winnipeg in 1949. He was a devoted member and strong pillar of the Hungarian United Church for over 50 years, 40 of which he served as Chief Elder. He played a crucial role in the settlement of fellow Hungarian immigrants, particularly following the Revolution in 1956. Having already been here several years, he was an important source of knowledge and information about life in Canada. With his outgoing, jovial personality and unconditional willingness to help others, Joe developed a circle of close friends he loved to entertain with his violin, playing beautiful, nostalgic Hungarian folk songs. Joe enjoyed cooking and gardening. He had a successful career as a small engine repairman at King’s Electric, and could fix anything. He was fiercely independent and never married, although he did find love in his sunset years.

Joe worshiped the sun and enjoyed summers at the lake or on the beach and spent many winter holidays in Mexico and Cuba. After his sister immigrated to Toronto, he drove down every Christmas to be with her and her family.

Joe was predeceased by his parents; sister Katalin; brother-in-law Bela; nephew Botond; and many dear friends. The past six years have been difficult for him since the passing of his beloved companion, Ilse.

Gratitude to the exceptional staff at Arlington Haus and 2nd floor Misericordia Place. Interment will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7, at St. Vital Cemetery, the Rev. Karen Lumley officiating.

Rest in peace, Joe bácsi.
