It is with profound sadness that the family announces the peaceful death of Howard Mathieson on May 23, 2024, at Grace Hospital.

He is lovingly remembered and will be dearly missed by his devoted wife Elaine; his son John (Junko); his daughter Angela (Leita Kalinowsky); grandpup Shadow; and his cherished grandchildren, Kaiya and Tyler Mathieson.

Howard taught at the University of Winnipeg Collegiate for over 30 years and in 2007 was made a Fellow of the University of Winnipeg. An entrance scholarship was established in his name. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • "Howie" as we all knew him at the Collegiate at the University of Winnipeg was a true character, which I mean as a sincere compliment. I can honestly say that through all the years of working with Howie, I cannot remember exchanging a negative word with him. He was completely devoted to his teaching and to the betterment of his students through his ability to make them feel comfortable and important. Howie spent many years as a dedicated and supportive boys basketball coach - it was his passion and he excelled in it. What strikes me most about Howie though was his devotion to his family. He was a true family man, meaning that John and Angela were the lights of his life. He was so proud of them. And I could tell that either when Howie was talking to his wife Elaine on the phone, or talking about her, that she was the love of his life and his soul mate. His voice always softened when he was talking about Elaine. Howie's life was full of love, friendship, and laughter, and he lived that life full and well. My sincere condolences to John, Angela, Elaine, and their extended family. Arlene Skihar - Posted by: Arlene Skihar, U of W Collegiate, Retired (Co-Worker) on: Jun 04, 2024
