CARL SONNICHSEN

Peacefully in his sleep, Carl Sonnichsen passed away at Oakview Place in the early morning hours of May 31, 2024, at the age of 102.

Carl was born in Kiel, Germany December 18, 1921, the youngest of four siblings who arrived in Canada with their mother in October 1925 to meet up with their father who came earlier that year. The Sonnichsen family lived on farms in Niverville and Charleswood before moving to Headingley in 1927.

After his father's death in 1939, Carl and his brother, Helmuth, ran their father's trucking business and developed it into a school bus business, Sonnichsen Transportation, in which Carl served as licensed auto mechanic and driver until his retirement in 1986. Dad loved to fix things and was well known for his mechanical abilities. He worked hauling water until 80 years old and rented storage space until 100.

Dad married the love of his life, Agnes, in 1961 and they were married 58 years. Together they raised two children, Sharon and Ronald. He and mom also loved working in their yard and world travel.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Sharon Pucely (Don), son Ron (Kathy) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilhelm and Anna Sonnichsen, wife Agnes (nee Bergen), brother William (Jean), sister Anna Hatfield (Charlie), brother Helmuth (Gertrude), stepdaughter Elfriede and son-in-law Keith Parsons and grandson Chad Dunn.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Oakview Place for their compassionate care of dad.

Funeral service will be held at Westwood Community Church June 17 at 11:00 a.m., 401 Westwood Drive. Interment to follow at Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, 82 Curry Drive in Headingley.

In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

  • My condolences to Ron and Sharon. May God shower you with Devine peace at this time. My favorite memory of my uncle is him bringing six cartons of 7-up on a hockey stick for us kids at Christmas.
