UNA ROSALIND VIGFUSSON

March 25, 1944 - June 30, 2024

It’s with profound heartbreak, that we announce the passing of our loving mother, Amma, Aunt, Great-Aunt and friend, Rosalind Vigfusson (nee Palsson), on June 30, 2024. She was surrounded by family and close friends, while receiving care at the Arborg and District Health Centre. She managed to maintain a bright spirit to live life to the fullest in times of adversity.

Rosalind is survived by her children: Eric (Jen) and children, Nathan, Adam, and Henrik; and Kristian (Jenn) and sons, Kallum and Liam. Rosalind will be missed by nieces, nephew, and families. Rosalind was predeceased by her beloved husband, Einar, parents, Johannes Palsson, Olga (Holm) and stepfather Thor Johannesson, siblings, Baldur and Jona (Richard); parents in-law, Emily and Johann Vigfusson, Pall (Bernice), Herman, and Baldvin Vigfusson.

Rosalind was born on March 25, 1944, Geysir, Manitoba. Rosalind attended grade school in Geysir and High School in Arborg. Rosalind started piano at six years old and she began composing music at age 10. In 1999, she formed the New Iceland Youth Choir; they performed mainly in Icelandic and had opportunities to sing for Icelandic dignitaries in both Iceland and Canada, even performing for Queen Elizabeth II. In 2004, a second choir also travelled to Iceland. Memories were created, promoting Icelandic culture and heritage while leaving lasting impressions on audiences.

Rosalind graduated in 1965 from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing. She formed lifelong friendships. Rosalind worked as a nurse for over 30 years both in Winnipeg and Arborg. Often she would meet someone, who looked vaguely familiar, and would quickly discover, she delivered them!

A love story began when Rosalind met Einar while on duty at the Arborg hospital. They married on November 27, 1971, had Eric a year later and were blessed with Kris…13 years later! Rosalind and Einar were always supportive with each other’s interests. You often didn’t hear one name without the other! Rosalind and Einar, Einar and Rosalind..! Einar often remarked, ‘I can always find her in a crowded room; light just surrounds her.’

A highlight for Rosalind was being Fjallkona in 2007 for the Islendingadagurinn. She was radiant, stunning and fulfilled the title well. She was proud of her Icelandic Canadian Heritage, and felt fortunate that she grew up speaking both Icelandic and English. She often spoke about “The Ties that Bind”. It was important to keep the ties with Iceland while maintaining a respect for the history of New Iceland.

In 2012, Rosalind was awarded the Governor General of Manitoba Diamond Jubilee Medal for her countless hours of volunteering in her community.

When her mother, Olga, moved into Betel, Rosalind began to play at Happy Hour every Friday. Playing for the residents brought just as much joy to her, as it did for her audience.

Long roads and winter storms were never a deterrent if the destination was a rink where her grandchildren played hockey. When Kallum and Liam arrived, grandchildren were next door! Kallum would run over daily to Amma’s house to visit.

Rosalind loved company! If a group arrived unannounced, she was ready; the more the merrier! Parties at the cabin were legendary, with Rosalind at the piano! Through the years, we’ve appreciated these fun memories and the people who were a part of it.

What a wonderful legacy - kind, loving, giving spirit. Goda Nott Elskan

We’re grateful to everyone who has been part of Rosalind’s care. A special thank you to Dr. Nazim and the wonderful staff at the Arborg and District Health Centre; your compassion and care was above and beyond! Thank you to the staff at the Gimli Community Health/Johnson Memorial Hospital for your guidance. A heartfelt thank you to Donna Wishnowski for your love, support, and direction.

Funeral Service will be held at Ardal-Geysir Lutheran Church, 301 River Road, Arborg, Manitoba on Friday, July 19 at 2:00 p.m. Reverend Theo Robinson officiating, Interment prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. at the Arborg Community Cemetery - west on River Road. All are welcome to attend. After the Church Service there will be a gathering at the Arborg Hall, open mic with musical participation, sharing stories is encouraged!
