Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOAN MARIE SMITH
Beloved sister, aunt, friend. Joan passed away peacefully July 13, 2024.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Thora and Harold Smith; sisters, Beverly Crich, Gerry Smith, Ann Graveline; brothers, D’arcy Smith, Brian Smith and Bob Smith. She is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Donna (Glen) Johnson and Debbie Bechthold and numerous nieces and nephews. Heartfelt gratitude goes to physicians and staff of Actionmarguerite, all of the angels who looked after Joan with such compassionate and loving care.
Joan graduated from St. Mary’s Girls high school in 1955 and Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. After graduating from Nursing in 1959 she pursued the study of psychology in Ponoka for a year and then continued onto Woodstock, ON, ending up settling in Winnipeg in 1960. Joan was dedicated to her nursing career from 1959 to 1996, working at Health Sciences Centre, Deer Lodge and Riverview Hospital. Upon retiring she volunteered at Creative Retirement Centre, and was a lector with St. Ignatius Church. She was actively involved with Secular Franciscans, Friendship Force, Toastmasters and Reh-Fit. Joan enjoyed her bridge, loved and adored her nieces and nephews. Where ever a beautiful soul has been, a trail of beautiful memories follow to be held in our hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like all of Joan’s friends to unite in sharing an atmosphere of love, joy and giving to all they encounter each day. Flowers may fade, but the gift of a friendly smile, or random act of kindness can spread like seeds across the world. Let God’s love shine through all of us, and bring peace to our hearts. And whenever you see a sunflower, think of Joan, it was one of her favourites.
A graveside service will take place on Friday, August 16, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue.
