ELSIE UNGER
Peacefully, on Friday June 21, 2024, Elsie passed away at Oakview Place in Winnipeg.
Elsie was born in 1930 in Wladislawow, Poland to Theodore and Wanda (Berg) Redman. She was raised by her mother and step-father, Theophil Hinz.
She emigrated to Canada at the age of 20. In 1953, she married Jacob Unger in Winnipeg and they had 60 years together, most of them in the house on Polson Bay that Jake built in 1957 and in which they would raise their three daughters. Through her dedication to evening walks of ‘the bays’ and cups of tea on the front porch, Elsie built strong friendships and connections with her neighbours, especially Hilda Romanica, and she continued to do so when she moved to her lovely apartment at the Wellington in 2015 after Jake's passing.
Elsie was an excellent host, and family and friends were always welcome at home and at the cottage on Lake Manitoba. She was a wonderful cook and skilled baker, happy to make the family favourites but also always having an eye open for a new and interesting recipe to try. Jake and Elsie shared a love of gardening and preserving vegetables and were so proud of the garden they built and tended together with Marion and Carl at their farm every summer. She passed her love of entertaining family and friends to her daughters and grandchildren.
Jake and Elsie had an appetite for travel. While raising their children they traveled by car across Canada and the United States to visit family members. Winters were spent visiting warmer climates, with Hawaii being a favourite. They travelled across Europe, to Asia with daughter Lorna and to Costa Rica with Marion and family. Many trips were made to Ontario to visit family, as well as daughters Lorna and Karla in Ottawa.
Elsie will be dearly missed by her daughters, Lorna, Marion [Carl Classen], and Karla [Bill Winogron]; and her grandchildren, Lauren [Steven Sovran], Meghan [Simon Knutson], Joel [Jenna] and Adam. Such joy was brought to her by her great-grandchildren: Rhys, Pia, Cecilia, Susanna, Kai, Julian, Jack.
Elsie was predeceased by her husband Jacob Unger on January 28, 2014, as well as step-sister Ruth Snyder and step-brother Ed Reiman and their spouses.
Throughout her life, Elsie remained closely connected to her cousin Nati Ruppenstein and Jake’s siblings, John [Emily decd], Marie decd [Norm Okun decd], Anne [Richard Muller], Waldie Unger [Evelyn decd] and Kathy [Lloyd Penner].
To commemorate and celebrate Elsie’s life, a service and lunch will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday August 8, 2024 at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg. We welcome all who knew Elsie to join us. Interment will be held privately for family on the same day.
