DINA MCAMMOND
After a sudden and rapid illness, Dina died at Grace Hospital.
She was predeceased by her father Edelberto Filva Riera and her mother Camilla. She is survived by husband John; son Ian (Allison); daughter Sarah (Evan); grandsons, Henry and Charles; siblings, Cindy (Bruce), Carla (Jacko), Jay, and Carol (Bruno); and her niece and nephews.
Dina was born in Vancouver in 1953 and attended UBC originally in Anthropology but graduated with a first-class degree in Linguistics. She later gave up a successful career in university administration to be a stay-at-home mom and moved to Winnipeg in 1989.
Her natural curiosity led her into carpentry and creating the balustrade and banisters for the inside staircase of the house before returning to the workforce. She later took up the unlikely pastime of weightlifting and developed an impressive deadlift form, lifting her weight and a half. She retired in 2016 and continued arranging her garden and building a patio reminiscent of a Mediterranean cafe, and suggestive of her extensive travels.
She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, as a loving, creative, and self-sacrificing mother, for her wonderful laugh, and for her gracious hospitality, welcoming manner, and non-judgmental kindness, her home central to the lives of many family friends.
A service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave. at Henderson Hwy.
