DONALD WAYNE STEELE

1940 - 2024

Donald Wayne Steele died peacefully in Ottawa on August 30, 2024.

He is lovingly remembered by his sons, Brent (Chris and Andy) and Jeff (Kevin), sisters-in-law, Lorraine, Gloria, and Bev, stepbrother Doug (Meryl), his many cousins, nieces and nephews as well as their partners and children. He was predeceased by his wife, Marlene, his parents, Miriam and Elmer, his mother- and fathers-in-law, Thelma and Arthur Lawrence, Donavan Hartley, brother, Garry, sister, Patricia, and brothers- and sister-in-law, Dale Hartley, Gary Condie, and Don and Joan Lawrence.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Don was a prairie boy through and through. He spent the majority of his life in his beloved hometown except for a short period in Toronto in the early 1970s and the last two-and-a-half years in Ottawa near his son, Brent. Deeply proud of being a chartered accountant, he articled with Sharp Woodly, then worked for many other firms and organizations - Scott & McLaughlin, Great West Life, the Ministry of Finance (Government of Manitoba), National Trust, Price Waterhouse - before setting up his own personal practice that he ran with great devotion to his clients for 30 years.

He was a loving father, husband, and friend with a fierce sense of honesty and responsibility. His sense of service led him to participate in various charitable and fraternal organizations including as a Beavers and Cubs leader and member of the Rotary Club and Scottish Rite, Masons (thirty-third degree), and Shrine. He was a jack-of-all-trades who learned to plumb, wire, and build, allowing him to renovate both his home and cottage at Matlock Beach. After retirement, he took up curling and golf, the latter of which became a passionate hobby, with him spending many favourite moments in his last years at Breezy Bend Golf & Country Club. With his wife, Marlene, he vacationed in Phoenix, Arizona, and Palm Springs, California during part of the winter. They also enjoyed taking cruises including one with their family in Alaska in 2019 to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

For the loving care and support provided in his last years and days, his family extends its heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Waterford Grand Residence, especially the 3rd-floor PSWs and nurses.

At his request, no funeral will be held. Donations in his memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Don was my accountant for many years until he sold old and we were friends. Used to meet on occasion and at the golf club. And when he moved to Ottawa we communicated. Then for few years I haven't heard from him and was unable to contact him. I knew he wasn't well. I'm glad his son just contacted me. And I cried for him. Rest in peace my friend for we shall meet again some day - Posted by: Alex. Moodrey (Friend) on: Jun 25, 2025

  • Don came into my life through my school friend, his wife Marlene. He was always so welcoming when I returned to Winnipeg for visits and became my friend, too. I know he was a beloved husband and father, and will be missed by many. - Posted by: Janice Krempin Wahl (Friend) on: Sep 15, 2024

  • Remember Don and his wife from the finance department. He was a good person. Very competent and honest. - Posted by: Bill cessford (Co-worker) on: Sep 08, 2024
