JERRY HEMMINGER

After a short battle with pancreatic cancer, Jerry Hemminger passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024.

Jerry is survived by daughters, Dee-Dee (Ross), and Carleigh (Andrew); grandchildren, Donavan and Olivia; brothers, Gord (Christine) and Don (Sandy), Brian, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Judy; parents, Alfred and Rose, and brother Tom.

Jerry grew up and attended school in Beausejour, Manitoba. He met his wife Judy in summer school where he was enjoying a review of Canadian history. They married and Jerry worked various jobs before settling down for a career with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) that lasted more than 25 years. Jerry and his family started out in Pinawa before his accounting career took him to Ottawa where he earned his CGA designation, back to Pinawa, and then to Mississauga, where he eventually retired from AECL. After retirement, he and Judy returned to Winnipeg where he worked for the Sunrise School Division for two years before retiring for good.

Jerry shared his love of the outdoors with his family, filling summers with camping trips, gardening, and photography. His favourite season was fall when he and his brothers would take their annual hunting trip in the Whiteshell. He enjoyed travelling. He and Judy explored as far away as Papua New Guinea for three months while on a mission trip for the Lutheran church, ending with a tour of Australia. They also visited Mexico, the United States, and Dominican Republic. He liked to cheer on the Winnipeg sports teams, but especially loved whichever teams his grandson Donavan and granddaughter Olivia were playing for.

After his retirement, he spent time taking care of Judy in their Charleswood home. Jerry adopted a rescue dog, Jack, who was his best little buddy and constant companion until Jerry's diagnosis required him to rehome Jack.

Jerry will be missed by his family and friends.

At Jerry's request, a private family funeral will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or fundsforpets.org in Winnipeg.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Really sorry to hear about my friend Jerry’s passing. We’d lived in the same building and anytime I would see him and his adorable little Jack we’d chat. I’d been wondering where he was and also noticed his vehicle absent from the parking lot lately and just found out the heartbreaking news yesterday morning from the building management. I will miss him and Jack. My condolences to all his family, friends, and neighbours, like me that will miss him. - Posted by: Brad Ebner (neighbour) on: Oct 16, 2024

  • Jerry and my Mom could make each other laugh and laugh hard with their emails or phone conversations. It makes me smile to think they are laughing together again in heaven. For myself, Jerry was there for me when my parents passed away, sending me amusing emails. I am sending my love and hugs to Dee-Dee and Carleigh. - Posted by: Lisa MacNeil (Second Cousin (Janet (Jan) MacNeil's daughter)) on: Sep 29, 2024

  • Dear Dee-Dee and Carleigh, I was so sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. Your Mom and Dad were so nice to visit with at family events. It was always a good time to catch up with each other. All my sympathies to your families. Please take care of yourselves. Joyce Karlowsky. - Posted by: Joyce Karlowsky (First cousin to Judy) on: Sep 27, 2024

  • Sorry to hear about Jerry’s passing, I didn’t get a chance to know Jerry for long. I moved in a couple of yrs ago, Jerry and his smile will be missed around the little welcoming community. His sense of humour was clear, he loved to say as he and Jack walked by that barking, Jack was just a grumpy old guy like himself all while smiling away. Love and healing for all ❤️ - Posted by: Shannon (Neighbour) on: Sep 22, 2024

  • I was so sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. He was in my homeroom in High School and we were good friends. Later in life, he somehow found out my married name and called me to wish me a Happy Birthday. I asked him how on earth he remembered my birthday, and he said that his was the day before mine. I was embarrassed and ashamed at the same time that I had not remembered that. He asked if we had ever attended Goldeyes' games and I said that we had. So we made arrangements to meet at one of them where he introduced me to Judy and his grandchildren, Donovan and Olivia (proud Granddad that he was). He also met my husband, Bob. After that, we contacted one another by phone or messenger where he kept me up to date on what was happening in his life and I in mine. I'll miss you Jerry. Having moved around so much in my younger years,(excluding during my teens), I realize that having a friend over such a long period of time is rare and something to be cherished. - Posted by: Lorraine Finsten (High School Friend) on: Sep 17, 2024

  • We were saddened hearing of Jerry’s passing. Jerry was our next-door neighbour for 12 years and he was the best neighbour one could wish for. We started building a house in 2007. Jerry monitored contractors and reported what he saw, he organized and used his trailer to gather and transport Charleswood worthy loads of leaves, our driveway would often be cleaned with his snowblower while we were at work. He came up with method and lent us tools in an elaborate shed moving project and was party to “Home Alone” worthy set up of booby traps to disable unsavory characters from braking into house of the neighbour who was away on vacation. We have gone through some tough times together. He struggled with guilt for not being able to care for Judy at home any more. Fall of 2017 was hard for our neighbourhood, we all lost loved once within couple of months of each other. He was there for us all, while dealing with loosing Judy himself. We often gathered and partied together, even after he sold a house and moved away. He never showed up at the door without treats for our dogs and smile on his face. His beloved Jackie was our dog’s buddy, Jerry dubbed the group “Three Amigos”. Jerry had no problem starting conversation with anyone, always ready for a laugh. He could crack most unexpected joke with the straight face, while everyone around him was laughing out loud. Most of all, he was loving husband and proud father and grandfather, always talking about Donovan and his Miss Olivia. We will always remember and miss you Jerry. May you rest in peace!
